Another option for horse members is to participate in the Kansas 4-H Standard of Excellence Achievement Level recognition program. The purpose of this program is to create knowledgeable horse members in all aspects of horse safety, care, management and horsemanship skills. It also qualifies members to participate in District and State level competition. In order to receive this recognition, a member must complete leadership activities and pass written knowledge and riding tests for Level I, to be eligible to advance to Level 2, then Level 3. An oral exam replaces the written exam for Level 4.

Horseless Horse members are those who wish to participate only in the State Horse Panorama, Judging Contest, and other activities not requiring a horse.

Junior age members, age 10-13 on January 1, current year, who want to ride at the District and/or State horse shows must have been certified through Level I by show entry deadline. Senior age members, age 14-18 on January 1, who want to participate in District and State Showmanship and Halter classes must be certified in knowledge and leadership through Level 2 prior to entry deadline. Seniors who wish to ride at District and State horse shows must have completed all three sections of Level 2 prior to entry deadline.

Ask for a copy of the revised "Kansas 4-H Horse Show Rule Book" or view it on the web for policies concerning ownership, leasing, dress, tack, etc.
