4HCCS/National 4-H Curriculum to become available
Recently the National 4-H Council has become the official distributor of
the CCS materials. We have received word that Council will still be offering
the 35% discount for pre-press orders. We should be receiving 2007 Catalogs
with a listing of what is available for this fall by the end of March. I will
be working with Extension Distribution to put out the special order form. Most
likely orders will need to be in by April 15 to allow time for consolidation
of our state order. The new url for ordering direct from National 4-H Council
during other times of the year is:
http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/catalog/
When we get the new catalogs, I will list any new materials that are planned
to be added as project resources in the Project Selection Guide for next year.

Helmet Safety Update
At the February meeting
the horse action team added a statement about helmet use to the 2007 horse
show rulebook. The statement is as follows, “It is the responsibility of the
parent/guardian of the 4-H member to see that the headgear worn complies with
the approved standard and is in good condition. The Kansas 4-H Horse Action
Team strongly encourages the use of ASTM certified/SEI approved headgear in
all equine events. Protective headgear is encouraged in all classes without
discrimination.”

4-H Curriculum Q and A
Q1. Where can I find the order information for general 4-H publications
like officers training?
A -- These are Print On Demand(POD) materials that are listed by Distribution
in hard copy only twice each year. To find these materials on the web, go to:
then click on "print-friendly version", then POD and scroll down to "General
Materials". In addition, a list of 4-H POD's were recently sent to each
Extension office with the third quarter publication order form.Q2. When will we know what the new projects/ages/phases are for the new 4-H
year?
A -- We do not anticipate any new projects for this coming year, but we will
list new resources recommended by various Action Teams, etc. as soon as I
receive a new CCS 2007 Catalog to know what is available. There will be a very
short time frame before orders will be needed, so watch your county listserv
or possibly the Tuesday Letter for this listing. These would be resources that
will then be added to the Project Selection Guide.
Q3. How do I know what CCS materials are approved for use in Kansas?
A -- The approved list is always in the Project Selection guide for that year.
To know if you have the latest version of CCS materials, look at the Title
line for the materials on the special CCS order form. We list the year of the
latest revision or the year it was printed as a new set of materials.
Q4. If I can't find my Project Selection Guide, is there a list of project
materials on the website?
A -- Yes, the same listing that is in the Project Selection Guide is on the
general project page for each project on the State 4- H Website.
Q5. Where can I find the "word" form filler format for the Generic Project
Record Form, P1106?
A -- Go to http://www.Kansas4-H.org
click "Forms", then "Other", then "General", then "Generic Project Record
Form". It is our goal to eventually have all records with the Pxxxx
designation in form filler format.

NATIONAL
VOLUNTEER WEEK -- April 15-21
There is still time to plan and conduct Volunteer recognition for 4-H
Volunteers. Sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation, National Volunteer
Week is about thanking one of America's most valuable assets – our volunteers
– and calling the public's attention to all that they do to improve our
communities. Click on the link for more information. The 2007 theme is
"Inspire By Example" reflecting the power of volunteers to inspire the people
they help and inspire others to serve!
Promotional Toolkit
The 2007 National Volunteer Week toolkit has the necessary information and
resources to recognize your volunteers with a special event, or just to tell
the rest of your community about how wonderful your volunteers are! Use this
toolkit to leverage the nation's focus on volunteering during the Week and
honor your deserving volunteers.

From the VIP FAQ, Section VII, General Questions 9. How do we
handle changes in a volunteer’s personal information during the year?
If the personal information of a registered volunteer changes during the year,
the VIPRC should review the information as soon as it is known and if needed,
recommend to the Board/Governing Body a change in status for that volunteer.
The Extension Board/Governing Body may change the conditions of volunteering
at anytime. Buchele
Volunteer Development
Another way volunteering benefits the volunteer. Consider two people
who are identical with respect to religion, age, income, education, gender,
number of children, marital status and race, but one volunteers at least once
each year and the other does not. On average, the volunteer will enjoy greater
happiness and better health than the nonvolunteer. Specifically, the volunteer
is 9 percentage points more likely to say that he or she is "very happy" than
the identical nonvolunteer and 4 points more likely to say that his or her
health is "excellent". Source 2000 Social Capital Community Benchmark
Survey. From the book Who Really Cares by Arthur C. Brooks.

Kansans Selected Chaperones for International
Exchanges
Lois Carlson, retired Family and Consumer Sciences Agent and volunteer in
Neosho County has been selected to co-chaperone a 4-H group this summer under
the Wisconsin 4-H Ambassadors to Australia Exchange. Lois was selected by
Wisconsin 4-H to travel with a Wisconsin 4-H volunteer and a group of thirteen
teens from seven states to Victoria, Australia for a month this summer.
Johnson County 4-H’er Kathryn Zalenski represents Kansas as a 4-H delegate in
the Ambassador group. The group will travel between June 20 and July 19 and
have host family stay in Victoria State as well as some time in Melbourn and
Sidney.
Kansas also had a chaperone selected for the Nihongo
Language and Culture Program conducted by Labo Institute in Tokyo which
precedes the 4-week Summer Outbound Exchange in Japan. She has just been
notified of her selection and needs time to arrange her schedule before her
name is announced. All five of the Kansas outbound delegates to Japan have
elected to take part in the three-week Nihongo program this summer, so we are
very pleased the 4-H International Programs Committee (IPC) selected a Kansan
to be with the group during their time in Tokyo for the Nihongo training
before they travel to other parts of Japan for their four-week home stay. The
Nihongo delegates have other host families in Tokyo arranged by Labo during

Saline (Rhys Young), Harvey (Joe Kondziola), and Morris (Shannon Layne).
