I am
excited to be part of Kansas 4-H. I have always wanted to
participate as a team member in such an excellent organization.
I’ve been asked to tell more about myself and my background. I grew
up in Seoul, South Korea and came to Topeka, Kansas with my parents
when I was 20 years old. I began my studies at Washburn University
in 1997. In 2002, I was required as a Korean citizen to return to my
country and serve two years in the Army where I worked as an English
translator. After my time in the Army, I worked for a Voice over
Internet Protocol (VoIP) company in Korea from 2004 through 2006. I
then returned to Kansas and graduated from Washburn University in
December or 2007 with a Computer Information System degree and have
acquired certification from Microsoft and Cisco networks.
In my new job with 4-H, I offer technical support to agents
accessing the KSFair website, and they tell me I will be doing more
with Blue Ribbon Youth Enrollment, On-line registration, and others
as I get more familiar with our systems. I look forward to providing
help with all aspects of your work and look forward to meeting you.
Thank You Kindly,
Yong Kwon

Out-of-School Program Idea
Conference - October 27, 2008--Sedgwick County Extension Education
Center
Do you partner with teachers, afterschool program providers, or
recreation directors? If yes, would your team want to engage youth
in long-term, structured learning-environments that address their
interests and help develop their physical, cognitive, social and
emotional skills and abilities? You’re invited to come participate
in a first of it’s kind "Out-of-School Program Idea Conference" open
to anyone - certified teachers, afterschool program directors,
community or faith-based afterschool providers, summer recreation
providers and extension agents.
This one-day conference sponsored by
K-State Research and Extension 4-H highlights hands-on curricula
that adapt easily for out-of-school settings. Kansas 4-H youth
development professionals will share favorite hands-on educational
activities and resource ideas that are sure to keep youth excited
and centered.
The breakout session include:
Environmental Education; Health Rocks; Walk Kansas for Kids; Kids-A-Cookin’;
Science Engineering and Technology; Math Tessellations; Junior
Master Gardener; Leadership Initiatives; Programming for 5 and 6
year olds; and "how to" make learning activity kits.
Paper registration is available under
What's Hot (www.Kansas4-H.org).
The cost is $10 which includes lunch and activity materials.
Registration deadline is October 20, 2008. Further
questions may be directed to Pam Van Horn,

Sabbatical Ideas for
K-State Research and Extension Staff
Have you been thinking about applying for a
sabbatical but not sure what you would like to do? There are several
projects that would benefit the 4-H Program in Kansas. If you are
interested in the full description or discussing these projects
please contact Beth Hinshaw
Finding Youth Development Resources in Spanish. With
increasing numbers of Latinos living in Kansas, it is often hard to
reach the parents of these youths without materials translated into
Spanish. The purpose of this sabbatical would be to review what
Spanish materials currently exist in the Cooperative Extension
System that would be appropriate for Kansas 4-H.
Workable Grant Opportunities. The purpose of this sabbatical
would be to search appropriate grant options and create a list with
contact information, subjects areas funded, amounts funded, and time
lines for applying, etc. for use across Kansas Extension.
CHARACTERCOUNTS! in Kansas & Kansas 4-H: Find out what has
happened since the formal introduction in January 2007 and what
program supports are needed to promote its use in 4-H clubs and
groups. Develop new CC! program supports for clubs/groups.
Lifeskills: Find out which lifeskills 4-H'ers, or some subset
such as Key Award recipients, believe that they are mastering as a
result of participation.
“Shooting Sports Project Club Model" that can help local
Coordinators and Agents "link" this project (that has lots of male
volunteers) to the Club/Council structure.
Project Clubs/Seasonal 4-H: Is the “project club” one of the
answers to getting and or keeping today’s busy youth and families in
the 4-H program. Some questions to be answered: What models should
be looked at, and what are the challenges and opportunities within
those models? Are there projects that would work best?
Next Generation Volunteers: What type of volunteer
experiences will work best for the next generation of volunteers?
How are these volunteers different from the volunteers we have
counted on in Kansas 4-H for decades. How and where, should this
group of volunteers be recruited. What type of recognition would be
appropriate for this group? What other considerations are necessary?
The Need for Male Volunteers: Experience, anecdotal evidence
and now research by the North Central Region Volunteer Specialists
points out the small number of male volunteers in the volunteer
leader role in 4-H. This sabbatical project would be to research
roles that would attract male volunteers and methods of recruiting
and retaining male volunteers to the 4-H program.
On-line Volunteer Training: Generations research tells us the
younger generations prefer to get their information online.
Investigate what other states are doing and compile a “best
practices” guide and recommendations for Kansas 4-H or develop an
online training option for new Community Leaders or Project
Leaders.
Matching Programs to Age Appropriate/Developmental Skills:
This sabbatical would offer the opportunity to research 4- H
curriculum materials and align the educational materials with the
Kansas School Standards.
Member Retention: Which local 4-H Programs are doing the best
job at retaining 4-H Members after the first year of membership.
Which ones are retaining older members? Analyze characteristics of
those top programs and develop systems, training or materials to
help local 4-H programs improve retention of 4-H members.

How Do We
Grow 4-H? -- An Update
With the focus on the future, and recognizing that in the corporate
world a "business that is not growing is dying", over 100 extension
and 4-H Foundation staff members engaged in lively discussion groups
on April 23rd in Great Bend. Note-takers captured 39 pages of
comments and suggestions from 18 discussion groups, which were
posted on the 4-H website for nearly 3 months. As the facilitator
for the day-long open space meeting, Dr. Daryl Buchholz, Associate
Director, K-State Research & Extension, charged all those present
with the responsibility of taking their passion and putting action
into "Grow 4-H!" -- more specifically, "Grow 4-H" has to happen at
the local level.
In a presentation to the Kansas 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees on
April 24th, the discussion groups were summarized into four major
topics:
• Enhancing Club Based Participation
• Retaining the 4-H'er
• Reaching Out To a Broader Youth Audience
• Training for the Agent and Volunteer
The Board of Trustees are very interested in and supportive of well
designed efforts at both the local level and the state level to
"Grow 4-H".
We believe that it will take all of us, working in partnership with
others at all levels of the organization, to put action into those
passions. In addition to these comments gathered on April 23rd , the
voices of youth and volunteers have and will be gathered in several
different venues including Campference, KYLF and the State Volunteer
Forum. At the State 4-H Program Rally (December 11-12), further
discussions will take place with the goal of designing the framework
for action plans.
During the coming months, the State 4-H Action Teams, State 4-H
Advisory, State 4-H Livestock Advisory and other task forces will
review the comments and suggestions as they design and implement
state-level programs, events and curriculum. During the past months,
further discussions have taken place involving extension staff
(local and state) regarding:
1. Programming with faith-based organizations.
2. A school enrichment data base.
3. Enhanced resources for project leaders.
4. New member and new family support and retention.
5. Marketing efforts.
6. "Strengthening Clubs I & II" training for agents and key
volunteers.
In the midst of our busy summer schedules, it will be easy to put
aside and perhaps forget about the momentum that was created on
April 23rd. Yet, I challenge each and all to not forget nor put
aside your thoughts, your energies and your passions for growing the
Kansas 4-H Program. As you kick off the new 4-H year, consider
engaging your 4-H PDC in a lively discussion on "How Do We Grow Our
4-H Program?"! Invite your Extension Board Members to share their
vision, dreams and goals in growing their 4-H program! And, don't
forget about engaging your 4-H Council to address this topic!
After all, we all have responsibility to reach as many young people
with a quality 4-H program as possible. That's what's expected of us
by our constituents, legislators, donors and young people and their
parents in our communities. And, that's what's expected of extension
professionals by extension professionals.

2008 Kansas 4-H Participation Forms
Required After October 1
Based on feedback from agents and
usage over three years, several refinements were made to the Kansas 4-H Participation Form
(Publication Number MG35). It has been available on the web in both
PDF and Microsoft Word Form versions since January, 2008. Either
version of the Kansas 4-H Participation Form has been accepted for
state 4-H events occurring prior to October 1, 2008.
After that date, in conjunction with the new 4-H year and enrollment
process, all participants must submit the new 2008 version of the
form.
If you
wish to provide the form through
your county web site,
please link to the PDF version on the KSRE
Publications Library at
http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/library/4h_y2/mg35.pdf. You
may also
link directly to a Microsoft Word Form version at:
http://www.Kansas4-H.org/Forms/Participation/MG35Kansas4-HParticipationForm.doc
The Microsoft Word Forms version is set up to preserve the layout
and formatting of the document, yet allows participants to save and
edit their information as needed. By linking directly to these
forms, you save server space and remain linked to the most current
form regardless of future edits.
You can read more about the form at:

BUILDING STRONG 4-H
CLUBS |
Enrich the 4-H Club
Agents when you’re out and about at the many summer 4-H events and
activities encourage club leaders to think about forming Parents’
Committees. The Parents Committee can enrich the learning
experiences for club members by identifying, recruiting, orienting,
training and supporting organizational/community leaders, project
leaders, and club helpers. As 2007-08, comes to a
close and you start thinking about the 2008-09 4-H year take some
time to explore the opportunities available to provide a strong
foundation for 4-H clubs. Check the Kansas 4-H web site for more
ideas to strengthen the 4-H club at

CHARACTERCOUNTS! |
|
CHARACTERCOUNTS! If You Love
Competition, You Never Lose
Suppose you're an Olympic athlete and
you hear that the only person who has a chance to beat you is ill
and may have to withdraw. Are you overjoyed at your good luck or
disappointed that you won't be able to compete against the very
best?
You ought to be disappointed.
Olympian John Naber, winner of four gold medals in swimming, says a
true sportsman wants to compete against his best competitor on his
best day. Although that makes winning more difficult and less
likely, it also makes the event more exciting and a victory more
meaningful. Being declared a winner is not real victory; being the
best is.
In any event, what's more fun: to
compete against someone you easily dominate or against someone who
forces you to be your best and makes every point an exciting
challenge? The aim of competition is to have fun trying to win and
to love the game enough that you can enjoy yourself whether you win
or not.
Competition is not a form of war. The
people you compete against are also the people you play with. They
aren't enemies. The word "competition" comes from the Latin root
competere, which means "to strive together, not against each other."
Be thankful for quality competitors
who push you to your limit. You'll find events more healthy and
enjoyable when you respect and like your opponents rather than hate
them. When you compete against someone as good or better than you,
you may not always win, but you never lose.
Michael Josephson, April 22, 2008.

CURRICULUM CORNER |
Highlights from Curriculum Action Team
Meeting on June 28, 2008 are:
1. Vision Statement -- The Kansas 4-H Curriculum Action Team will
help determine the most current and effective curriculum for all 4-H
venues.
2. Mission Statement -- The Kansas 4-H Curriculum Action Team will
connect all Kansas 4-H participants with project and other
instruction through trained mentors that use the most current and
effective curriculum.
3. The National 4-H Curriculum will be the primary source for
curriculum materials that are most current and effective with state
or local curriculum as supplemental curriculum.
4. The Action Team supports the use of trained Project Leader
Trainers. It is hoped that every county might have a volunteer for
the purpose of training project leaders.

other Extension Units. Please share these with your coworkers by
sending them to the State 4-H Office for listing.
6. The Curriculum Action Team supports the application of school
standards to lessons and will work to support and help provide
training in that area.

DAIRY |
State Fair 4-H/FFA
Dairy Entries
Please remind all of your dairy cattle
exhibitors that qualify for the State Fair that they must enter
online through the local Extension Office! There still seem to be a
few dairy families that always show in the Open Class at State Fair
that think one entry is enough. Just as all Open Class entries must
go directly to the State Fair, all 4-H/FFA Dairy Cattle entries must
come through the local Extension Office and entered on-line through
the KSFair System.

PYD (Positive Youth
Development) |
|
Positive Youth
Development means that we focus on what’s right with kids! We build
strengths even in the face of real problems.
A strength-based approach is a set of ideas, assumption and
techniques:
·
Youth are active
participants in the learning process (empowerment)
·
Youth have strengths,
often untapped or unrecognized
·
Strengths foster
motivation for growth
·
Youth have strengths that
are obvious – easy to see
·
Youth also have strengths
that are internal – they may have to be coaxed to reveal them.
Asking the right
question might reveal a hidden strength:
? What do you like to do on a sunny day?
? Who do you admire?
? If you could travel to a foreign place, who would you bring?
? What is the nicest thing you have ever done?

Development: NYS AYD Partnership)

SHOOTING SPORTS |
4-H Shooting
Sports Program Instructor Renewals & Activity Reports
It's time again for those Extension Units with certified 4-H
shooting sports programs to ask their Certified Instructors,
Certified Junior Apprentices, and Discipline Assistants to submit
their Annual Activity Reports for the July 1, 2007-June 30, 2008
year. 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators should be prepared to do this
for the entire unit. Also, this is the time when we receive renewals
for everyone that are to be covered by the special 4-H Shooting
Sports Liability Insurance provided by the state. Both of these
tasks are accomplished by completing one form per individual. The

VOLUNTEERING |
Kansas
4-H Master Volunteer Program
The Kansas 4-H Master Volunteer program is for people who want to
step up their volunteer contributions and Agents who want help with
their 4-H programs. The win win is that Master Volunteers help out
their programs and their agents and everyone benefits.
Master 4-H Volunteers fulfill a role mutually determined with
their agent. This role could be many different things depending on
the needs of the local 4-H program and the interests of the
Volunteer. The key is Master 4-H Volunteers do things that are
important to the local program--things that increase the
opportunities for youth in 4-H.
Master 4-H Volunteers receive training and support from the
Master 4-H Volunteer training and support team. This team also
offers help for agents to implement the Master 4-H Volunteer role.
The Kansas Master 4-H Volunteer training for 2008 will be
November 21 - 22, 2008. It will begin at 9:00 am on the K-State
Campus in Manhattan, then travel to Rock Springs 4-H Center the
afternoon of the 21st and continue until the evening of the 22nd.
Application and registration information is included in the
brochure which will be posted to the state 4-H web site before
August 1st. Registrations should be sent to the Southwest Area
Office and are due by October 20. For more information, see the
Master Volunteer web site

Volunteer Development Ideas
April 2nd a group from Kansas attended the Iowa 4-H Volunteer
Development training with Steve McCurley, an international volunteer
development expert. We came back with many great insights and ideas.
Here is another installment:
Leroy; The studies that were taken on volunteers. One is What
Volunteers don't want, another on the different ways of recruiting
volunteers.
Emily; We are in serious competition with other youth organizations-
we need a volunteer brochure to be a more user-friendly approach to
help ease into the process instead of handing them the form and
saying, "Here, fill this out".
Abbie; If you get a volunteer involved they are likely to bring more
people, resources and other positives to the organization. If a
person volunteers when they are young they are more likely to come
back as an adult.
