4-H Sponsors National Youth Science Day October 8, 2008
As a part of our National 4-H Week celebration, the 4-H movement across the country will sponsor National Youth Science Day on Wednesday, October 8, 2008. National Youth Science Day will be the keystone in providing young people with opportunities to explore science, engineering and technology. A significant part of the National Youth Science Day activities will be participation in a national youth science experiment and then reporting the results to a common website. 4-H Clubs, classrooms, and other youth groups will be able to participate at their regular meetings during the month of October and upload their findings and even video footage and reports of their experiment. Additional promotional information will be available from the National 4-H SET website. Look for the latest details about the experiment in future Tuesday Letters and at the Kansas 4-H website.

BUILDING STRONG 4-H CLUBS
Creating a Welcoming Club Environment
The new 4-H year is quickly approaching! Agents as you prepare 4-H newsletters, club leader trainings, and new year kick-offs, remember to stress with leaders the importance of making a great first impression. Encourage the leaders to create a welcoming environment for visitors as well as club members.

As you think about 4-H clubs, most members, volunteers and parents sit next to people they know when they attend 4-H meetings because it’s comfortable. Encourage leaders to promote club members to become better acquainted with members they may not know as well as their buddies by adding one of the following tips to the regular club meeting.
  • Get acquainted activities or icebreakers
  • Roll calls that ask questions about member’s interests
  • Mix club members by encouraging small group or committee work
  • Pair up 4-H members: older and younger; experience and inexperienced; differing projects.
  • When youth and adults "feel" as if they belong, they are more eager to attend and participate.

    CHARACTERCOUNTS!
CHARACTERCOUNTS! - Teaching Character is a TEAM Effort
The CHARACTERCOUNTS! strategy is built on the word "TEAM." Character education works best as a team effort with the home as the center aided by schools, youth organizations like 4-H and faith communities. TEAM is also an acronym. The T stands for "teach" E for "enforce," A for "advocate," and M for model." First we must teach young people about the nature of good character. We should be specific, concrete and repetitive in defining, illustrating and demanding the traits embodied in the "Six Pillars of Character" (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship). Next, we have to enforce the principles by establishing clear rules of behavior and consistently imposing fair, firm and timely positive and negative consequences that demonstrate our own commitment to ethical conduct. Third, we must boldly advocate adherence to moral principles, constantly exhorting, encouraging, and inspiring a belief in the desirability of good character. Finally, and most importantly, we have to model ethical behavior in all we say and do. Everything we do sends a message that will either bolster or undermine our attempts to build character in others.

Kansas 4-H Resource Library -- The Curriculum Action Team plans to further develop this resource by asking all Extension Units to share their successful local programs. Please submit your successful lessons, activities, brochures, etc. to rcurry@ksu.edu for posting in the Kansas 4-H Resource Library. Sharing your successes will keep other colleagues from wasting their time developing something already done. The Action Team is particularly interested in the listing of successful School Enrichment programs and lesson plans. We know several counties have school enrichment coordinators that have many lessons that are popular and proven. Please send these lessons in a format that can be easily downloaded and modified by colleagues to fit their situation. Sharing your successes will help other Extension Units "Grow 4-H". Adams

    HEALTHY LIVING
Healthy Living Mission Area – Physical Activity standards to change:
On June 11 the HHS Secretary announced in the Federal Register proposed changes to the nation’s physical activity standards for children and youth. Should the changes, as recommended by a blue-ribbon expert panel, become effective next year they will read:

". . .fitness benefits can be expected to accrue to most children and youth who participate daily in 60 or more minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity. . . .include regular participation in each of the following types of physical activity on 3 or more days per week: resistance exercise to enhance muscular strength in the large muscle groups of the trunk and limbs, vigorous aerobic exercise to improve cardio-respiratory fitness and cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk factors, and weight-loading activities to promote bone health. Experiences consistent with these goals involve participation in physical activities that are developmentally appropriate, that minimize the potential risks of overtraining and injuries, and that provide children and youth with opportunities for enjoyable participation in a wide range of specific forms of physical."

    Master 4-H Volunteer
    http://4-h.k-state.edu/Volunteer/MasterVolunteer.htm
The overall purpose of the Master 4-H Volunteer program is to increase the resources available to the local 4-H program. The Master 4-H Volunteer program does this by training that equips the Master 4-H Volunteer to accept additional responsibilities in the program.  Master 4-H Volunteers fulfill a role mutually determined with their agent. This role could be many different things depending on the needs of the local 4-H program and the interests of the Volunteer. The key is Master 4-H Volunteers do things that are important to the local program. The Master 4-H Volunteer Training will be November 21 – 22, 2008. It will start on campus in Umberger Hall the morning of November 21, 2008, then transition to Rock Springs 4-H Center that afternoon. Registration is due Oct. 20, 2008 and is by hard copy to the Southwest Area Office.

Say Thanks to Volunteers (and others too)
"You can never thank people enough." ~ Jeff Zucker, president, NBC television, from T4D from Kirk Weisler.
Say Thanks, it makes you feel better and makes others feel better too.
Following Fair is a great time to say thanks. Our fairs could not happen without lots of help from lots of great folks. The (often only) pay they get for what they do is the satisfaction in doing a good job and maybe a few thanks. You can double their pay right away by saying thanks to them. You will stand out because your thanks might be the only one they get. Maybe you will start a thanks cascade; you say thanks to someone, they feel good and say thanks to someone else who says thanks to someone else and so on and on.

There are a thousand ways to say thanks, pick one and say thanks to someone today.

    WORLD CITIZENSHIP

    Outbound 4-H International Exchanges
As of August 15 all eight of our 2008 International Exchange delegates will be back in Kansas when Genna Gehrt returns from her 8-week International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) Representative experience in Germany.  Genna has had a great time living with host farm families in several areas of Germany.  We encourage 4-H’ers to read her accounts from Germany posted on the state 4-H web site at http://Kansas4-H.K-State.org/worldcitizenship/experiences and read her articles in upcoming issues of the Kansas 4-H Journal.  We hope to add reports and photos from our delegates to Japan, Finland, Costa Rica and Australia to the site soon.

As we begin the new 4-H year, please let 4-H’ers, their parents and alumni know that we will have all the same opportunities for summer travel exchanges abroad as last year with one exception.  The exchange with 4-H Norway alternates traveling and hosting from one year to another.  This year U.S. 4-H’ers traveled to Norway, while in 2009 Norwegian 4-H’ers travel to the United States.   4-H alumni and staff 19-25 may apply for an IFYE Representative Exchange Program for time periods ranging from 6 weeks to 6 months which can be tailored to the applicant’s interest within the range of partner countries available on several continents.  Adults may apply as chaperones from the 4-H age exchanges.

Applications for 2009 Outbound Exchanges will be due November 3, 2008.  Application materials and information may be found at http://www.kansas4-h.org/WorldCitizenship/.  We plan to have an updated application posted on the web site by September 1, but all details such as costs may not be updated that soon.  Inquiries may be directed to Mary Kay Munson at 785-238-3631 or munsonm@nqks.com and Beth Shanholtzer at bshanholtzer@gmail.com.  Munson will not be accessible between September 14 and October 12.  Please refer all queries to Shanholtzer during that period.
