2003 IFYE’s Selected; Host Families Needed Kansas has approved Janna Dunbar, Franklin County, and Erin Hjetland, Brown County, for the International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) Representative program in 2003. Country Assignments are still being negotiated for their six-month exchanges. Hannah Nielsen, Lincoln County, will join 4-H’ers from Missouri and South Dakota on an IFYE Ambassador six-week exchange in Norwegia 4-H this summer. Kansas 4-H expects to host a counterpart
each for Erin and Janna (possibly from Costa Rica and Northern Ireland) for
six months from late June through November, with 2-3 weeks per family. We
will also host two of the six incoming Norwegian Now is the time to encourage 4-H families to host an IFYE this summer or fall. There has not been a time in the last half century when interpersonal relationships and global understanding were needed more in our world. Encourage families who haven’t hosted before to try this two-three week experience. The family members, their 4-H club, the community and your county program can all benefit. Families provide room, meals, and transportation for the exchangee and they can learn about another culture while building a friendship with a young person and family in a distant land. They will be encouraged to begin e-mail communications as soon as they are approved to host. We hope county Extension staff will work with Kansas IFYE alumni to make IFYE exchanges safe and successful in 2003. Recruit solid families to apply. Help us meet new national guidelines for in home interviews with prospective host families and help include inbound IFYE’s in 4-H and other Extension programs. After Hannah returns in August, she’s expected to make 25 presentations, and Janna and Erin are to make 50 each upon their return in December. Book them before they leave for upcoming meetings of your groups. Applications and a Q and A sheet about hosting an IFYE may be found on the following International Youth Exchange 4-H web site: http://www.ifyeusa.org/exchange/hostfamily.html and click on "forms". Note that an Extension staff member need to sign the application. Then send it to Becky Miewes, 1650 1800th St., Iola, KS 66749. Adult members of host families are to also have an approved Extension Volunteer Application on file. If they are not currently approved volunteers, be sure to provide an application to be completed and returned to your office. You may contact Becky at 629-365-7954, pbmiewes@alltel.net or Mary Kay Munson at 785-238-3631, munsonm@mail.aces.uiuc.edu Applications are due by March 15 for full consideration. Munson |

Discovery Days Caucus --- June 5- 6 Many of you have expressed a valid concern regarding "what will happen in 2003 regarding a campus-based teen conference?" In spite of reduced budgets and personnel, there will be an event this summer! Plans are in the making for the 24-hour Discovery Days Caucus, which will be a unique opportunity for teens and adults to be involved in an opportunity to listen to a challenging presentation by Eric Chester, focus group discussions, and creation of ideas for Discovery Days beginning in 2004. In partnership with Pat McNally, Discovery Days Caucus Coordinator, the Discovery Days Action Team will be giving strong leadership to the planning, design, and production of this event. Note: there are some open positions on the Team which need to be filled to bring the team up to full force. Those positions include: 5-Youth, 1-Agent, 4-Adults If you are interested in serving in one of those positions, please contact Pat McNally immediately at: pmcnally [at] oznet.ksu.edu Tentative plans for the Caucus include mid-afternoon registration/check-in on Thursday, June 5th at the residence hall, to be followed by supper and an evening of activities on campus. Friday, June 6th, will be filled with the key note presentation, focus group discussions and reports, and an uplifting closure to the event by mid-afternoon. By mid-March, additional plans and information will be sent to your office. In the meantime, you are free to advertise and recruit teens to attend this unique gathering, focusing on the theme of "Color Your Life". I welcome any suggestions or ideas that you would like to share with the Discovery Days Action Team to help make this event a special happening. Fultz |

State 4-H Venturers Headed to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Note: Under the leadership of key volunteers, the State 4-H Venturers Program will offer one trip this coming summer to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Due to budget cuts and reduction of personnel time, the backpacking trip in the Grand Tetons of Wyoming has been cancelled. FYI: In 2002, 54 youth and adults from across the state were involved in the Venturers Program. We are truly excited to offer a unique opportunity for teens and adults who are seeking an incredible wilderness challenge. The State 4-H Venturers are headed to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness this summer (July 5-15th) for 6 days and 5 nights of canoeing, portaging, outdoor cooking, fishing and embracing the beauty of this area. The BWCAW is located in northern Minnesota on the Canadian Border. The program will be limited to a total of 40-45 participants on a first-come, first-serve basis (30 teens and 15 adults will be divided into 5 crews of 6 teens and 3 adults). One of the major components of the Venturer Program is crew leadership development with teens serving as Crew Leaders and adults serving as Advisors to the crew. The program also practices three-deep adult leadership for each crew. Teens must be age 14 by July 1, 2003 and have graduated from 8th grade this school year. Adults must have completed the VIP process and be listed as a registered volunteer in your county or at the state level. Teens and adults will also complete registration forms as BSA members and volunteers. It is imperative that adults love to work with teens in an outdoor environment! Participants will be required to attend the 3-day Shakedown training (May 30-June 1) at Camp Hanson, Kerwin Resevoir, Phillips County, and complete a medical physical in order to participate in the program. The Venturer website is in the process of being updated. You can find additional information pertaining to the program, past adventure trips, photo galleries, list of gear and tons of other stuff including many links to reference and resource sites: znet.ksu.edu/dp_4hyp/venturers/The Registration Brochure and Form will be sent to Extension Offices as well as past and potential Venturer participants the week of February 17th. Please copy as needed. You can also find the brochure and form on the 4-H website - www.oznet.ksu.edu/dp_4hyp. I greatly appreciate your help by putting this information in your county newsletter and sharing it with teens and adults who have indicated an interest in this type of program. Fultz |
