State 4-H Contests for 2004 - A process of defining the most logical and appropriate time and location for the various state 4-H judging contests, skill-a-thons, and quiz bowls has been underway. Where an action team exists, recommendations from that action team are being implemented. Where no action team exists, the coordinator along with those in close leadership roles have provided insight and input into decisions about the time and location for the 2004 state 4-H contests.  Following is a rundown of current/pending decisions on the state contests:

Crops - 2004 Kansas State Fair - Saturday, Sept 11, 2004
Dairy Judging / Quiz Bowl - Kansas Junior Dairy Show - Aug 2004
Dog Quiz Bowl - Rock Springs - November 2004
FCS Judging / Quiz Bowl - TBD
Horse - Douglas County - June 29, 2004
Horticulture - Wichita Garden Show - Saturday, March 6, 2004
Livestock - KSU Campus - Date TBD
Livestock Skill-a-thon - KSU Campus - Date TBD
Meats - Excel, Wichita - August 2004
Photography - 2004 Kansas State Fair - Sunday, Sept 12, 2004
Poultry - 2004 Kansas State Fair - Saturday, Sept 18, 2004

Several leave some decisions to be made. As these decisions do come forward, announcements will be made. We believe the decisions on moving the horticulture, livestock judging, and dairy judging to the different events/locations will result in better contests with the opportunity for more comprehensive educational opportunities for the young people involved.  Photography will continue to have an educational activity associated with the Wichita Garden Show, but the state contest is better suited to take place at the Kansas State Fair. Family & Consumer Sciences 2004 contest/quiz bowl
events are still under discussion by the FCS Action Team. Buchholz

Youth in Action/Community Service Grant - Funded by MetLife Foundation.  Over $36,000 in funds available - deadline October 1, 2003.

Community action grants will be awarded in the amount of $500 to $2,000 to support ongoing community service programs or to stimulate new and creative youth-led community service programs.  Grants require youth teams to identify critical issues in their communities, develop activities to address these issues, and educate and involve other young people and adults in community service.  Youth are to take leadership roles and be actively involved in writing the proposal and implementing the service project.

Community services projects that take place after the school day are encouraged.  Youth often lack structured activities and programs to participate in after the school day is done.  Involving youth in community service projects after the school day provides them with new opportunities for leadership and education.  Collaborative efforts reflecting the diversity of the community are also encouraged.

Applications available at:  www.grants.n4h.org under 'Community Service. Gerhard
