4-H Events & Activities Coordinator Position
Filled - Justin Wiebers, 4-H Youth agent with Tennessee Cooperative
Extension, has been hired as the state 4-H youth development events and
activities coordinator. He will be joining the Kansas 4-H program in
mid-April. Justin has his BS from Colorado State University, and MS from University of Tennessee in Agricultural Education. He has been a county extension agent within the Tennessee Cooperative Extension Service for the past 8 years. Prior to being an agent, Justin also served as an intern within CSU Extension and with National 4-H Council. His experiences have included substantial involvement in the leadership and coordination of numerous 4-H youth events and activities. We look forward to Justin joining the Kansas 4-H youth development team to strengthen the service and support provided for the numerous statewide events and activities for Kansas 4-H. Buchholz |

| Dairy Fitting and Showing Clinic plus Judging School - April 23 at the State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. The clinic will begin Friday evening around 5:30pm. The event is after the State Dairy Sale and before the Spring Show on Saturday. Several older youth will be available to mentor and teach younger youth. State 4-H Shooting Sports Spring Match - The Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports Spring Match will be held at the Lyons County Fairgrounds in Emporia, April 17, 2004. Disciplines to shoot that day are Archery, BB, Air Rifle and Air Pistol. Qualifiers in these disciplines for the National 4-H Shooting Sports match to be held this summer in Columbia, Missouri, will be selected from these participants. website, http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/4h/DDays/2004/DiscoveryDays.htm Reminder: Spirit Leader Applications are due April 1st and should be sent to Al Davis, Johnson County 4-H Agent. FYI: Photos will not be used in the selection process but rather will be used in the training process of those selected to serve in this first-time-ever-opportunity. Reminder: 1,650 tennis balls will be needed for 550 delegates at the Wednesday evening session with Bill Cordes, our keynote speaker. If you are interested in collecting tennis balls for the program, please contact Robin Eubank, reubank@oznet.ksu.edu in the very near future. There are a number of changes to the Discovery Days schedule and experience for 2004. Thank you for alerting your teens to these exciting changes, as noted in the first page of the Registration Materials. McNally National Volunteer Recognition Week - April 18-24 - We all know the importance of recognition for our volunteers throughout the year, not just one time a year. But, there is one special week that is dedicated to recognizing volunteers --- and it takes place April 18-24. If you are searching for creative and new ideas to use in recognizing your volunteers, you might check out the resources on the following websites: www.avaintl.org and points of light.org/catalog McNallyMaster 4-H Volunteer Training - April 3 --- McPherson. A reminder that registrations for this newly implemented volunteer development program are due March 26th in the State 4-H Office. Details about the Master 4-H Volunteer Program were electronically mailed in early March to all Extension Offices. The program is a project of the Kansas Association of 4-H Volunteers, which is providing scholarships to those who participate in the program. We hope that staff will be able to successfully recruit key volunteers for a specific job or position, who are willing to invest 20 hours for training and "give-back" 40 hours to your 4-H program. McNally Kansas 4-H Venturers Video is available!!!!! For only $10, the newly released 4-H Venturers Video can be purchased! The 7 minute video captures the essence of what the program is all about via footage from the Boundary Waters adventure, interviews with teens and adults and fantastic music. Thanks to Deb Pryor, Venturers Action Team Member and Volunteer, the professionally produced video is top-quality and can be a fantastic recruiting and educational tool for your teen programs. Please contact the State 4-H Office if you would want to purchase a video. McNally Kansas 4-H Venturers - Rafting on the Green River in 2004! In addition to the Philmont Backpacking Adventure (August 4-13) in New Mexico, the 4-H Venturers will also be white water rafting on the Green River in NW Colorado/NE Utah (June 18-25)!!!! Both trips have a maximum number of participants (25 for rafting and 24 for backpacking). At this time, the rafting trip is filled. But if you should have a teen (14 years of age by June 1, 2004) who is interested in the rafting trip, please contact Jo Ellen Arnold, Franklin Co. 4-H Agent jearnold@oznet.ksu.edu to get on the waiting list. McNallyNational 4-H Camping Institute --- A Phenomenal Happening! Thanks to the incredible leadership given by the members of the State 4-H Camp Action Team, the National 4-H Camping Institute held February 7-11 at Rock Springs 4-H Center, was a phenomenal happening! We were honored to host 142 folks from 26 states for this intensive, action-packed and fun-filled conference. And, we were honored to have many of you helping in a variety of ways throughout the institute --- registration, van drivers for tours, workshop hosts, silent auction helpers, and on the list goes. What a great team effort!Thanks to the support provided by the Kansas 4-H Foundation, each county will receive a notebook of printed resource materials from the Institute along with the "Kansas 4-H Camp Songs" CD. You will find an array of fantastic workshop handouts and program ideas in this notebook that can be incorporated and utilized throughout the year, just not at the summer residential camp setting. Again, our heart-felt thanks to those who helped make this conference a very special chapter in the book of life for the Kansas 4-H Camping Program. McNally |
Strengthening Youth Nutrition and
Physical Activity
Programs - The 4-H Youth Department Office and
FNP are sponsoring a training to improve the skills of those who teach
nutrition education to youth. Non-FNP staff are encouraged to attend this
training also. To provide staff with the background to achieve the greatest
impact for school-aged-youth, this training has been designed to help staff:
Trainings are April 27 at Lyon County Extension Office, Emporia; and
April 29, at Pottorf Hall in Manhattan, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Registration is due April 10. A registration form can be found on the 4-H

Two Junior Master Gardener Teacher/Leader Trainings - Have been scheduled for April. The same agenda will be covered at both meetings. The all-day meetings will cover information on the Junior Master Gardener program, the curriculum, and how to organize a JMG group, as well as information on working with youth. Any interested Extension agents, Master Gardeners, teachers or community volunteers are invited to attend. Basic 4-H Operations I Training -
We invite you to attend Basic 4-H Operations I Training
set for April 12 and 13, Throckmorton Hall, KSU. We begin our 5th
year of offering this session to share critical information for handling 4-H
managerial issues. The training session begins at 1 p.m. Monday, April 12 and concludes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13 in Throckmorton Hall, Room 2002 on the K-State campus. This training is part of the new agent training cycle, but anyone in the system that would like a refresher course is welcome to attend. Topics addressed include: 4-H financial management, VIP, accountability to the 4-H mission, learning through events, risk management, program planning plus more. Beth Hinshaw, Extension Specialist, 4-H Youth Development, SE Area and Diane Mack, Extension Specialist, 4-H Youth Development, NE Area are co-presenters of this training. "Moving Ahead: Preparing the Youth Development
Professional" Training - We invite you to
attend the "Moving Ahead: Preparing the Youth Development Professional"
training set for May 4-6, 2004 at Rock Spring 4-H Center. Moving Ahead
is designed to provide the basic principles and practices of youth
development as well as the language needed to advocate for youth and their
families, and for programs you offer that support them. It is structured to
take advantage of the opportunity to network with one another; to gain from
the commonality, as well as diversity of your experiences; and to strategize
an integrated approach to working with youth in your community. The course will start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 4 and end at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 6. Registration cost is $255 which includes all materials, meals, breaks and lodging. Deadline to register is April 5. Registration brochures will be sent to county/district offices. 4-H DAY WITH THE ROYALS
- Take me out to the ball game. . . . . It's time to start making plans
for the 2004 4-H Day with the KC Royals. This year the game will be held
Sunday, October 3 to kick off National 4-H Week! The ball game is a few months off, but there are some opportunities for 4-H'ers to start planning for now. Color Guard – members selected will present the flags during the opening ceremony of the game. As a group, submit a one page essay telling why your group would like this opportunity. What does presenting the colors mean to you? National Anthem – individual or group selected will sing the National Anthem. Submit a tape or CD recording. May be accompanied or a cappella. Citizenship Project
Tours: Bleeding Kansas – The story of Bleeding Kansas will come to life when the Kansas Chautauqua hits the road this June. Scholars portraying pivotal figures of the time will share how their characters words and actions affected what occurred in Kansas Territory. The Chautauqua also will include exhibits, period music, workshops, history tours, reenactments and a youth Chautauqua camp. The Bleeding Kansas event, will stop in four cities: Junction City, June 4-8; Colby, June 11-15; Fort Scott, June 18-22; and Lawrence, June 25-29. The exhibition is a part of Kansas Territory's sesquicentennial celebration, Among the exhibition's artifacts is the Kansas-Nebraska Act document, which will be on display for the first time outside Washington, D.C. at the Kansas Museum of History through June.
