4-H Master Volunteer Training - A reminder that the 4-H Master Volunteer Program will be launched this year (August 28 in Emporia or October 16 in Scott City; to be followed by the second session, November 19-20 at Rock Springs).

Now's the time to work with your PDC to identify a program, event or activity that could benefit from the leadership of a 4-H Master Volunteer. An important key to the process of filling this position is targeted recruitment. Please contact your Area 4-H Specialist or Pat McNally if you have questions regarding this exciting program, a project of the Kansas Association of 4-H Volunteers.

The Kansas State 4-H Youth Council members hope that you (or one of your volunteers) will be interested in sharing your expertise or talent with this opportunity.

You will find the letter and proposal form on the 4-H Web page. http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/4h/kylf/Request_Presenters.pdf

County Fairs Starting Soon - The 4-H Youth Livestock Advisory Committee thought it useful to send out some brief reminders around frequent questions and issues with respect to the livestock projects. (paraphrased from the 4-H Policy & Guidelines)

The 4-H youth division of fairs is to function on two principles:

1) the exhibit demonstrates knowledge and skills learned in the project experience over the past year.

2) the 4-Her cannot benefit from multiple premiums, auctions, or sales in shows with the same exhibit. Simply paraphrased, an animal project exhibit sold through a premium sale, at a public auction, or privately cannot be shown in any subsequent 4-H show, regardless of subsequent ownership.

Also, keep in mind that the 4-H livestock/premium sales must be managed by the Fair Association, sponsoring organization, or contracted to a bonded third party by the Extension Executive Board. The Extension Council cannot, by law, engage in any type of commercial enterprise as a preferred service for the project enrollees.

For more complete wording on these and other policies and guidelines on roles, relations, and responsibilities with respect to fairs and shows, I would encourage you to refer to the 4-H Policies and Guidelines. http://intranet.oznet.ksu.edu/4-h/

Look in the lower right column on this web page and click on the Policies and Guidelines link. The relevant information on fairs and shows is presented on pages 21 through 24 of the Handbook.  Adams

Come Visit   http://www.Kansas4-H.org - To simplify our marketing efforts and make our web site address easier to remember, we have requested a new sub-domain name with K-State.  You can begin to market this new address as soon as you are able to use it.

Along with this, we have also purchased domain name of “Kansas4-H.org” as well as “Kansas4-H.com” and “Kansas4-H.net”  All these addresses will route browsers to our current web site. Wiebers

Official 4-H Clover Name and Emblem

Did you know the level of protection provided for the 4-H Name and Emblem exceeds that of a copyright or trademark?  As such we all have a responsibility to make sure the clover we use to market our program is the official emblem displayed in the correct fashion.

               Correct                                      Incorrect

In addition to using the appropriately shaped (notice the V shape where the leaves attach on the incorrect clover) and proportioned clover (don’t stretch or distort), the stem should always point to the right, the entire clover should always appear without portions being hidden or covered by text or other images.  If you wish to use a clover in the background, use one without “H”s on the leaves.  More detailed guidelines are available at: http://www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/4-Hguidelines-v4-26-04.pdf

Many of our current materials have versions of the clover that will be updated and corrected as these materials are revised.  Please check to make sure you are using the correctly shaped clover and if you need to download the official version, please visit: http://www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/emblem/4h_name.htm    Wiebers

New Focus for Kansas 4-H Journal - Recruitment Issue - Please note - - this year's recruitment issue of the Kansas 4-H Journal is written for new parents that are considering 4-H as the youth organization for their children to join.  We want all families who receive the 4-H Journal to share it with a new family inviting them to join 4-H.

4-H Marketing Action team members wrote articles, focusing on information that would be helpful to parents as they consider 4-H.

In the past, the recruitment issue focused on ways to help current 4-H families or Ambassador Teams to recruit new families.

Additional copies of the recruitment issue (4H 851) can be ordered for 75 cents. It is listed on the September 2004 New Publications order from that is due July 1.

Also note that the 4-H display (S141) can be ordered for $26.85 on the Fourth Quarter Publications form that is due July 1. Mack

Marketing Kansas 4-H - Keep Thinking Purple Cow - The county fair is one of the most visible events to market your 4-H program. What "flavor sample" of 4-H will you provide interested families during the fair?

We encourage you to try to embrace Seth Godin's Purple Cow theory and share with them how truly remarkable the 4-H program is by making 4-H worth talking about, worth noticing, new and interesting in your community.

To engage others - we suggest having an interactive 4-H booth. Your ambassador team could facilitate quick, hands on, learning experiences. If they attended the State Ambassador training last March they learned ideas of these creative activities. For other ideas, contact me at dmack@oznet.ksu.edu. Mack

4-H Programming In Extension Districts - A committee chaired by Alan Ladd was charged with beginning the process of thinking through issues related to 4-H programming in a District governance structure. We want to thank Alan and all the committee members for taking on this important responsibility.

We want the benefit of everyone's wisdom on organization and management of the 4-H program as additional Extension Districts form across the state.

Please review the draft of the committee's work to date. Since Alan has moved on to Iowa State, please respond with comments and suggestions to Diane Mack, Northeast Area 4-H Specialist.  J.Lindquist

2004 4-H Meat Judging And Identification Contest - Events for this summer are available on the 4-H website.  http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/4h/subpage%20State%20Events3.htm

There are instructions on accessing training materials on the American Meat Science Association website.  If you have difficulty accessing any materials you would like to use in training, please let me know.
http://www.meatscience.org/judging/default.htm

Let me know if you are bringing a team to either of the events.  The hosts put out a lot of effort for us to do this, and we wish to use our time and their facilities efficiently.  When completed, thanks are always appreciated.  Schafer dschafer@oznet.ksu.edu

Invitation to Pilot 4-H Visual Arts - 4-H Art Pilot for Youth, Grades 6th-12th The 4-H Cooperative Curriculum System (4-H CCS), under the leadership of Idaho and Missouri 4-H, is ready to launch the national pilot for the new visual arts curricula for youth in grades 6th-12th. Beginning in June 2004, 4-H sites across the nation will be piloting Sketchbook Crossroads and Portfolio Pathways. Sketchbook Crossroads and Portfolio Pathways teach youth the elements and principles of design and develop life skills while following the National Visual Art Content Standards. Both books are designed for youth in any setting, in and out of school, individually or working in groups.

SKETCHBOOK CROSSROADS - The three units of Sketchbook Crossroads are: Drawing, Fiber and Sculpture. Through the visual arts activities youth have the opportunities to develop life skills in communicating, problem solving, positive identity and self motivation. Helper information is embedded within the book.

PORTFOLIO PATHWAYS - Portfolio Pathways, also designed for youth in any setting in grade 6th-12th, continues to art experience developing life skills while featuring three units: Painting, Printing, and Graphic Designing. Helper information is embedded within the book.

WHO MAY PILOT - It is time to get the word out about these new and exciting visual arts curricula. Please consider piloting the curricula with a broad audience such as: 4-H clubs, camps, school enrichment, military youth programs, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA's, junior high, high school and home school programs. Each site will complete 2 activities within a unit focusing on 3 units (6 activities total) OR pilot one complete unit (6+ activities).  Pilot curricula will be available in PDF format and accessed on the 4-H CCS web site for downloading.

HOW TO PILOT - The pilot will begin in June and run until mid-November 2004. You may complete the activities at any time during these months. All art supplies and materials are the responsibility of the pilot site.  If you wish to pilot Sketchbook Crossroads and Portfolio Pathways go to http://www.agls.uidaho.edu/4-H/visualarts/artindex.htm

Review the Art Matrix and decide which activities you will do. Download the Pilot Registration form. Send the completed form to Ina Linville, University of Missouri 4-H

mailto:LinvilleI@missouri.edu or LinvilleI@missouri.edu Include your name, mailing address, phone, and fax. In the subject line type: 4-H Art Pilot.  Ina will then direct you to the pilot activities that may be downloaded from the Internet.  Adams

Influence The Future of 4-H Learning - Help write a pre-proposal for a new 4HCCS Educational Materials Series!  Pre-Proposals due August 15, 2004 - see http://www.N4HCCS.org  and click on 2004 Curriculum RFPs.

Do you or a colleague have a passion for a particular 4-H topic and wish you could find the funds to develop state-of-the-art experiential learning materials in that subject? Would you enjoy collaborating with dedicated experts from around the country in jointly developing better materials than you could do alone? Are you interested in serving on a design team to revise existing 4HCCS products? If so, this opportunity may be for you!

The National 4-H Cooperative Curriculum System, Inc. calls for Extension subject matter and youth development staff, as well as volunteers and youth at state or county levels, who would like to write or help write a pre-proposal, due August 1 and, if the pre-proposal is accepted, to submit a full proposal by November 1st. E-mail ASAP the 4HCCS Point of Contact for any of the priority topics to express your interest in helping. Let the Point of Contact know if you also might be interested in coordinating or co-coordinating a national design team.

4HCCS exists to create and market the most-needed new curricula for 4-H. It now has more than $300,000 that can be invested in the development of new 4-H curricula. In an April '04 on-line survey, the following topics were judged to be most likely to generate the largest enrollments when introduced in 2006. Proposals for their topics will also be fully considered for funding.

2005-06 Priorities for development of new 4HCCS educational materials

1. Making Youth Organizations Work

A single volume written for leaders of elementary aged youth that should provide theory and hands on activities that guide young people in the early development of group decision making and team skills. Should include the basics of using parliamentary procedure to run a meeting, as well as serving in officer and committee chair roles. Potential for clubs, After School and School Enrichment.

Potential Partners: 4HCCS Point of Contact: Rod Buchele rbuchele@oznet.ksu.edu

2. Changing Spaces

This series should include two complementary units: Home Environment and Landscaping. Creative interior design is wildly popular on TV today, and youth are interested in how they might learn to do it themselves. The second unit should consist of ornamental horticulture as applied to complementing the appearance of a home. Both should be targeted at middle school youth.

Potential for Clubs and Individual Study Possible Partners/ Resources:

4HCCS Point of Contact: Allan Smith asmith@csrees.usda.gov

3. Video Production Media Literacy

Television media is a multi-billion dollar industry, with far reaching influences, and it pervades almost every aspect of our culture. Youth participating in this project should be empowered by learning both the basics of video production and media message deconstruction. (analysis), that wants to be a lead partner in the development of this material.

Possible Partner: "Just Think" a San Francisco based organization

4HCCS Point of Contact: Michael Wallace mwallace@co.skagit.wa.us

4. GIS/GPS

An experiential approach to learning about using Global Information Systems/Global Positioning Satellites. This set should contain recommend basic instructions for three age levels, the games that people are playing, and examples of the myriad community service projects taking place everywhere. Also information about how to use the software for school reports or community development projects. A "kid friendly" approach to today's high tech wonders.

Potential Partners/ Resources: ESRI, Forest Service 4HCCS Point of Contact: Ellen Rowe ellen.rowe@uvm.edu

5. Electronic/ Robotics

Already, here and there around the country, 4-H groups are actively involved in Lego Mindstorm and First Robotics groups. This robotics curriculum should be a guide to how interested 4-H groups can become involved in robotics, and the kinds of existing opportunities available. The "spin" for 4-H should be the focus on developing life skills as one learns about and builds robots. High tech/high touch. The series should utilize engineering principles, Lego robotic activities, programming principles. This should recast the technical content already available into a life skills focused experiential learning approach. Potential for Clubs.

Potential Partners/ Resources: First Robotics, Lego Mindstorm Robotics

4HCCS Point of Contact: Bob Horton Horton.2@osu.edu

6. State Produced Materials - Applications will also be accepted from states that have highly marketable products that they would like 4HCCS to market them on a revenue sharing basis. An RFP is included on the 4HCCS web site.

7. Other Topics - If you have a topic that you are interested in producing and making available to all states you are encouraged to develop a pre-proposal and submit it to the 4HCCS Office by the August 15 deadline. If your proposal is accepted 4HCCS will assist in recruiting design team members and providing all available support.

4HCCS Products to Be Revised for 2006 - The following 4HCCS Products will be revised for 2006. If you have an interest in contributing to the revision process please apply to the Point of Contact listed.
