Discovery Days --- "Discover Your 4-H Spirit", June 2-4 - Registration information has been sent electronically to your offices and is also available on the following website:  http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/4h/DDays/2004/DiscoveryDays.htm

Hopefully, you have had enough information to have begun the recruiting and marketing process for this dynamic conference. The registration information will have many details that will require diligent effort on all parties involved (teens, parents, office professionals and agents) to assure that the submitted materials and forms are completed as required in a timely fashion.

Thank you to all those who submitted class proposals to Pam Van Horn.  Having enough classes to handle 550 teens is a challenge and we appreciate your interest and support by recruiting instructors or offering to teach a class yourself!

A reminder of a new component to the 2004 Discovery Days experience, which is the involvement of Spirit Leaders. As noted in previous issues, this is an incredible opportunity for teens to serve in a key leadership role. Details for this opportunity will soon be distributed by Al Davis, Johnson County 4-H Agent.  McNally

Master Volunteer Training Workshop - The first session of the Master Volunteer Training will take place on Saturday, April 3rd, 9:30 am - 3pm at the McPherson County Extension Office. A second training will take place October 16 in western Kansas.

The four-hour workshop is open to anyone who has a sincere passion and interest in learning more about the 4-H program and serving as a key volunteer. It is also a pre-requisite for the second portion of the Master Volunteer Training, which will take place November 19-20 at Rock Springs 4-H Center.

Registration information will be sent electronically to extension offices within the next week or two. A project of the Kansas Association of 4-H Volunteers, in partnership with K-State Research & Extension, the Master 4-H Volunteer Program is designed to strengthen and enhance the county 4-H program. National 4-H Camping Institute --- A Fantabulous Success!!!!  Take a gathering of 144 people from 26 states at Rock Springs 4-H Center, which was covered with 10-12" of snow, and add a mixture of professional responsibilities, experiences in youth development programming, and a deep-seated passion for camping and you can begin to imagine the depth and breadth of what happened at the National 4-H Camping Institute, February 7-11. For five days and nights, the participants shared tons of information, much laughter, and created dynamic learning experiences applicable to a variety of educational settings.

For some participants, it was their first time to make snowballs and have a snowball fight, to build a snowman, and to go sledding! For many, it was the first time they had experienced frigid temperatures!

On behalf of the Camp Action Team, I would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to our colleagues who helped produce the various components of this professional development conference -- registration, evening programs, storytelling and music, night owl activities, class instructors, donations to the silent auction, snacks and ambiance, outdoor cookery, airport shuttles, tour drivers and guides. Your support and involvement was critical to the success and the "seamless" production of this conference. We appreciate you greatly!

It's not often that a state has the opportunity to host a national conference and we hope that our investment in this experience will have a ripple effect that will last for years, no matter if it is summer camp programs, day camp programs, after school programs or leadership programs.

Visit with the agents who attended NCI --- take advantage of their newly re-charged enthusiasm, excitement and ideas in your 2004 camping programs. Thanks to the support of the Kansas 4-H Foundation, each county will soon be receiving a notebook containing handout materials from workshops and special sessions, along with a Kansas 4-H Camp Music CD. By the way, additional copies of the CD can be purchased for only $5.00--- twenty minutes of great songs that could be shared with your 4-H club song leaders! Contact Robyn Swonger if you would like to purchase additional CDs.

Finally, a tip of the hat to the members of the Camp Action Team, who had the vision and passion for producing "Trails and Tales", unlike any other NCI happening. Accolades to the following agents for achieving your dreams!: Jo Ellen Arnold, Karla Hightower, Shawna Mitchell, Amy Gerdes, Cathy Musick, Beth Hecht, Andrea Schmidt, Jessica Heller, Nadine Sigle, Tranda Watts, John Beckman, Al Davis, Robyn Swonger, Glenn Brunkow and Diane Mack. 9. Please submit photos to 2006 4-H Calendar, National 4-H Supply Service, 7100 Connecticut Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD 20815.

The second opportunity is by telling us how "4-H Changed My Life!" Your story might be featured in the 2006 4-H Calendar. 4-H members, volunteers, parents, staff, and partners are welcome to furnish their stories. These personal testaments must tell the who, what, when, where, why, and how, so everyone can understand how 4-H changed your life. One story for each month will be featured in the calendar, and the author will receive one $10 gift certificate towards a future purchase in the 4-H Source Book.

Pork Quality Assurance Certification - Will be required of all youth exhibiting swine (market and breeding) at the Kansas Jr. Livestock Show and the Kansas State Fair in 2004. PQA certification will not only keep a good working relationship with the packers that the shows work with, but it will also provide learning and training in needed areas of swine management. I will be available to set up Train-the-Trainer sessions across the state. This will help reduce confusion among leaders, agents and instructors on this newly mandated program. If your area would like to set up a training session please contact me as soon as possible. The youth will need to be certified by June 15 (nomination deadline). The certification number will need to be provided on the nomination form.

National Pork Board has recently changed the youth requirements, curriculum, standards and method of reporting this information. Packets will be sent to each county with these new materials within the next two weeks.

To aid in helping test the youth in a short time span, I will be hosting a Youth PQA Workshop on March 27th, here in Manhattan on campus. Several current show topics will be discussed and youth will be able to meet the certification requirements for PQA. Watch for flyers to be out to the counties and schools soon! Voge
