Strengthening 4-H Clubs Training - Strengthening 4-H Clubs Training is set for Tuesday, December 14, in Emporia, and Wednesday, December 15, in Scott City.

Today, 4-H comes in many forms and sizes, but the club model still remains our flagship program.

Plan to join us as we spend time focusing on strengthening 4-H clubs. The purpose of this training is to strengthen our capacity to work with adults and youth to develop and support strong, effective 4-H clubs. Topics will include the latest research on characteristics of successful (strong) 4-H Clubs; creating a positive environment; leading club meetings that youth choose to attend; and sharing program management tools for club organization and operation.

You will go home with new resources and ideas to share with your club leaders. Please call or email Corrine Huse, NE Area Office by December 6 to register for either site. Registration fee is $10 which includes lunch. Make check payable to KSU. This training is supported through an Epsilon Sigma Phi Innovation Grant.

4-H Afterschool Training - Want to learn more about getting 4-H involved with after school programming in your community? The state 4-H Afterschool Team will be conducting two training sessions: Feb. 1, 2005, in Scott City and Feb. 3, 2005, in Emporia. More details will be coming, but reserve these dates on your calendar now.  Mack
County Competitions - Every year, during fair season, we have questions asking what shows can be used to qualify for state fair. This is determined by each county/district; however, NOW is the time to make the decision and publish the list so everyone will know well in advance of the next show season. Remember that you cannot list a show that is held after the state fair entry deadline for your county/district. These designations are in addition to animal nomination procedures. Projects to consider are: Dog Care and Training, Beef, Sheep, Swine, Dairy, Poultry, Rabbit, and Dairy Goats.  Adams
Horse Panorama - Information for 2005 will soon be posted on the horse program page.  Remember that any senior (age 14 and older) must have passed all three sections (knowledge, leadership and skill) of Level I and Level II prior to the deadline for the Panorama. Please do not wait until the last minute to accomplish this as our office is closed between Christmas and New Years, in accordance with University policy.

Marketing 4-H - An Ongoing Task - Even though 4-H Week has past, keep "4-H" in the spotlight through marketing efforts.

We encourage you to include an article in your 4-H newsletter reminding families to pass the recruitment issue of the Kansas 4-H Journal on and get it into the hands of a prospective 4-H family. With their personal invitation and testimony of the impact 4-H has had on their familys, how can others say no?

All of the recruitment issue articles are on the state 4-H web page under Resources/Marketing. Please feel free to use them to help you in your marketing efforts.  Mack

Invitation to Pilot New 4HCCS Communications Curriculum, Grades 3-12 -  The 4-H Cooperative Curriculum System (4HCCS), is ready to launch the national pilot for a new communications curriculum for youth in grades 3-12. Beginning in October 2004, 4-H sites across the nation will be piloting the Express Yourself series. The books are appropriate for youth in educational settings, in and out of school. Activities are designed to raise the awareness of different forms of communication and to enable youth to experience the impact of communication in their everyday lives. They are also correlated to the National Standards for Teachers of English. See additional information on the series below.

WHO MAY PILOT
The curriculum is appropriate for groups addressing communication with youth, grades 3-12, including: 4-H clubs, K-12 and home school programs, camps, school enrichment, military youth programs, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA's. Pilot curricula will be available in PDF format and accessed on the 4-H CCS web site (n4hccs.org) for downloading. Success stories and photos may be posted to the website from groups who pilot the curriculum. A photo release form is available online at the 4HCCS site for pictures you would like posted on the web.

HOW TO PILOT
The pilot will begin in October and run until January 1, 2005. You may complete the activities at any time during these months. If you wish to pilot the Express Yourself Communications Series , please email
jamisonk@vt.edu. Include your name, email, mailing address, phone, and fax. In the subject line type: 4-H Communications Pilot. More information will be sent to you via email about how to download the pilot materials. The pilot process enables the team to gather feedback from youth and adults to improve the series. The commitment includes completing as many activities as possible between October and January and completing an evaluation.

The evaluation forms for youth and adults will be available online at the 4HCCS website in November. They may be downloaded or filled out on-line by participants. We sincerely appreciate your willingness to participate. Your comments, feedback and suggestions will enrich the curriculum.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE SERIES Level 1---Picking Up the Pieces: Grades 3-5
What are the pieces needed to become a successful communicator? Youth discover how to put together a communication puzzle through nonverbal, verbal, and written activities that stretch and strengthen personal communication skills. Encrypting codes, writing songs, giving directions, dealing with bullies, creating an illustrated talk, and making a statement through art are a few of the exciting topics offered.

Level 2---Putting It Together: Grades 6-8--What communication skills are necessary to effectively express yourself and impact others? Stimulating activities provide opportunities for youth to practice and gain confidence in communicating in a variety of situations. Watch them unfold as strong communicators in front of your eyes while they present oral reasons, plan and present speeches and demonstrations, communicate assertively, practice making a good first impression, critique information, and mentor another. Use with 4-H clubs, after school programs, home school and other youth development groups.

Level 3---The Perfect Fit: Grades 9-12--How can youth find a perfect communication fit to pave the way for their future? Support youth as they enrich and polish their communication skills and develop a public presence by: speaking in public, exploring communication careers, writing resumes and cover letters, preparing for job interviews, dealing with anxiety, and much more! Use with 4-H clubs, after school programs, home school and other youth development groups.

Leader's Guide - Thirteen additional group activities, pointers for working with youth, suggestions for leading groups, and a resource list make this guide a valuable resource.  If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact:

REGULATORY ALERT

Since 1997, it has been illegal to feed any material containing ruminant protein to ruminant animals, due to the risk of generating or amplifying Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (BSE).

It is imperative that this action be followed in a complete and thorough fashion and that there be no leaks in this very important firewall.  Therefore, we at Pet Food Institute ask your assistance in educating farmers, ranchers, dairy owners, and those who exhibit beef, dairy or sheep show animals that pet food is not allowed as a feed for any of those animals.

Historically, salvage and/or distressed pet food served as a superior source of rumen by-pass proteins and high quality fats and was much sought after as a feed for ruminant animals.  The nutritional science hasn’t changed, but the pathological science has, and by Federal Regulation 21CFR §589.2000 the use of pet food in ruminant rations is forbidden.

Please help us in making sure that these products are properly used and in educating those who might use them improperly as to the inappropriateness of that action.

For more information, please visit www.petfoodinstitue.org and download the brochure Handling Salvage and Distressed Pet Food.  You may also contact Nancy K. Cook at nancy@petfoodinstitute.org; or Stephen Payne at steve@petfoodinstitute.org for more information.

Thanks for your help in dealing with this critical issue.
