2004 Kansas State Fair update - Periodically check this site for changes.  Password required.

DISCOVERY DAYS 2004 - We are truly excited that nearly 530 teens and adults will soon be arriving on campus to "Discover Their 4-H Spirit" during Discovery Days 2004. Many new program components have been added to the conference this year and the Discovery Days Action Team deserves accolades for their visionary approach to responding to the voices heard at the 2003 Discovery Days Caucus.

Packets were mailed on May 18th to Extension Offices containing a cover letter, delegate information (housing assignment, class assignments or adult assignments), a sample Personal Schedule, and an updated Discovery Days schedule. This information can also be downloaded from the intranet website: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/4h/DDays/2004/DiscoveryDays.htm

We appreciate your efforts in providing an in depth orientation for your delegates prior to Discovery Days. With a positive 4-H spirit and 100% involvement of delegates in all program components, this conference has the potential of being a highlight of their 4-H year! McNally

Camp Counselor Recognition Program - Thanks to the continued financial support of Kansas Farm Bureau, the revised Camp Counselor Recognition Program has been extended through 2004 on a pilot basis. The emphasis will be placed on local recognition of camp counselors at either the local 4-H Achievement Program and/or the Annual Farm Bureau Meeting. This will provide a unique opportunity for Extension Staff and the 4-H program to build and strengthen the partnership with the local Farm Bureau organization.

Details for the 2004 Counselor Recognition Program will be sent directly to Extension Offices by May 24th. As announced at the 2003 Fall Updates, the Distinguished Camp Counselor Program (i.e., jackets) has been eliminated.

Camping Groups can and should recognize their camp counselors at some time during 4-H camp --- using whatever ideas, techniques, and strategies they wish. Specially designed certificates will be made available for counties and districts to present to the counselors at the respective functions held later this fall.

IMPORTANT: This is a pilot project and continued support of the recognition program will be based upon the response by counties/districts to engage local Farm Bureau representatives at the respective achievement programs and meetings this fall. McNally

4-H MASTER VOLUNTEER TRAINING - A reminder that the 4-H Master Volunteer Program will be launched this year (August 28 in Emporia or October 16 in Scott City; to be followed by the second session, November 19-20 at Rock Springs).

Now's the time to work with your PDC to identify a program, event or activity that could benefit from the leadership of a 4-H Master Volunteer. An important key to the process of filling this position is targeted recruitment. Please contact your Area 4-H Specialist or Pat McNally if you have questions regarding this exciting program, a project of the Kansas Association of 4-H Volunteers.

Updated State 4-H Youth Development Action Plans - Margaret Wheatley said, "I believe we can change the world if we  start listening to one another again."

We did hear your needs at Spring Action Conference and are currently updating the two state 4-H Youth Development Action Plans to include those needs.

Also the team of Area 4-H Specialists wrote a sample 4-H Youth Development Plan. We hope this will be helpful to you as you work with your 4-H PDC to develop your plans at the county / district level.  Mack

Marketing Kansas 4-H - Keep thinking Purple Cow. Summer 4-H events and activities provide a multitude of opportunities to market your 4-H program. What "flavor sample" of 4-H do you provide during these events?

Will you try to embrace Seth Godin's Purple Cow theory and share with them how truly remarkable the 4-H program is?

The Purple Cow is an internal way to think of marketing Kansas 4-H - - we are not using a "Purple Cow" in our marketing materials but want you to think how to make 4-H worth talking about, worth noticing, new and interesting in your community.

The Kansas 4-H Marketing Action Team encourages you to make 4-H "remarkable" in your community - make it the Purple Cow of youth development.

Good luck with your summer programming and let us know what your marketing needs are.  Mack

Share your pictures of 4-H events. If you have not checked out our new look on the Web, take time to do so now. http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/4h/  Notice the changing pictures in the middle of the page under the title “This is Kansas 4-H.”

If your county has pictures you have taken at 4-H events and those pictured have signed a photo release form (MG-35 Rev), submit them to Cheryl Thomas at the State 4-H Office, 201 Umberger, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506-3404. JPEG images may be submitted as attachments to cthomas@oznet.ksu.edu. Photos will not be returned and use of the submissions is not guaranteed. Thomas

"Kansas 4-H Centennial Website now on-line" - I am pleased to announce that the Kansas 4-H Centennial now has a website home with the receipt of this May Tip Sheet. Thanks to Office Professional Cheryl Thomas for working on this for the past year or more. Note also that it is still a work in progress. We will be adding an option to encourage and allow agents, leaders, members and others to send in ideas that they will be celebrating in their clubs and counties across the state. This will serve as a cafeteria of ideas that can easily be shared at the local level.

Use the following link to access this website: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/4h/4Hhistory.htm/KSCentennialPage2.htm
Keep checking it periodically for updates, and let your 4-H families know it is now available. Fisher

Kansas State Fair Youth Premium Books: Plans are for the 2004 Kansas State Fair Premium books to be ready for distribution during 4-H Discovery Days. Agents are asked to pick up their books at the State 4-H Office. If you are not attending 4-H Discovery Days, make arrangements with someone from another county to pick them up for you.

As a cost cutting measure, the book has been combined into one 8 1/2 x 11 book. You will receive copies for office staff, but there will not be extra copies for 4-H leaders and 4-H families. The book is designed so that sections can be copied as needed. It is also available on the Kansas State Fair website and KSFAIR website.  http://www.kansasstatefair.com

Because all of the general guidelines are listed in one place in the book, it is important that exhibitors read all of the rules and regulations before exhibiting. Adams

National 4-H Competitive Event Eligibility. Please keep the letter of May 9, 2001, detailing National 4-H Competitive Event Eligibility, handy as you select participants for state contests. If you have team members who are taking college level classes while still in high school, or work with community college judging teams, this may impact them. If you have a community college in your county, please make the coaches aware of the new guidelines which took effect January 1, 2002.  Adams

North Central Regional 4-H Volunteer Forum - Important!!! Please mark this website as a great place to gather information pertaining to the 2004 North Central Regional 4-H Volunteer Forum:  http://www.four-h.purdue.edu/ncrvf
The Forum takes place November 11 -14 in Indianapolis, Indiana. If you are seeking opportunities for your volunteers to receive outstanding training and exposure to new ideas that can strengthen your 4-H program, then you will want to consider recruiting some folks to attend the Regional Volunteer Forum.

This annual gathering of 550+ volunteers from 12 states and three Canadian provinces features many workshops, informal sharing sessions, keynote speakers and lots of fun! Hard copies of the registration booklet will be shipped to each Extension Office in mid May --- but in the meantime, you can obtain up-to-date information from the website. McNally
