Horse Levels Testing Results now posted on the Web! Thanks to the programming expertise of Kinnera Reddy Angadi, a Graduate Research Assistant with the Department of Communications, the 4-H Horse Levels Testing Results are now posted on the 4-H Intranet. This project is just in the initial stages, but hopefully is fully functional. Extension personnel have access to view results from all counties and districts, so please use discretion in sharing these results. Later phases of this project being discussed and planned include an on-line testing component and the ability to print completion certificates at the local level. If you have questions or comments, please contact us in the State 4-H Office. Adams/Wiebers |

Farewell to Jean Paquette After 24 years of faithful service to the Kansas 4-H Youth Development Program, Jean Paquette retired June 3, 2005. Her dedication to the 4-H program is commendable and we will greatly miss her corporate history, knowledge and presence in our department. Jean is very excited that she will now have more time to spend in her gardens, with her grandchildren and traveling. Fortunately, we will be able to advertise and fill her position, hopefully, by late July. In the meantime, please know and understand that our department will be short staffed this summer. Please allow for more response time to your requests and questions. Our goal is to deliver top-notch customer service - but it may take us a bit longer than usual. Thanks for your patience, understanding and cooperation. McNally |

Opportunity for Unique Community Service Project for 4-H Members Please share the following information with your 4-H clubs, members and leaders as it offers a unique opportunity for them to be involved in a unique community service project. Please note: Responses need to be sent ASAP directly to Dale Goter (contact information is listed below) rather than to the State 4-H Department. KPTS-TV (Channel 8, Wichita) plans to apply to the Kansas State Historical Society for funding in FY2006 to collect video/audio stories from the ever-dwindling numbers of World War II veterans in Kansas. This past legislative session, the Kansas Legislature created a grant funded program for this purpose, intended to improve the historical record of World War II as described by surviving veterans, and to enhance the public's appreciation and understanding of the phenomenal contribution by these soldiers. KPTS has enlisted the partnership support of the Kansas State University journalism school, Barton County Community College and the Kansas State Library, and makes a similar solicitation for volunteer support from Kansas 4-H members. Our request is to have 4-H clubs and members across the state participate in the recruitment of surviving veterans. Clubs would assist in the distribution of promotional materials about the project and secure contact information about individual veterans who are willing to share their stories. 4-H members would also be encouraged to collect video stories on their own, using whatever video equipment was available. KPTS would assist the chapters in providing technical information about how to video tape the interviews. Kansas 4-H would be recognized in program credits during broadcast of an associated documentary created from the various video stories. Our grant application will be submitted by July 1, so even the most tentative commitments would be appreciated. Thanks again for your consideration of this request on such a short term notice. Dale Goter Thanks for sharing the news of this unique opportunity! McNally |

Kansas 4-H Centennial Corner Here is a brief reminder of Centennial due dates, projects and update of newest developments. County Fairs - some will celebrate the Centennial in 2005, and others are waiting until 2006. Encourage pre-orders for the new 4-H Cookbook. (If you have not seen a club cookbook packet in your office, contact Rhonda Atkinson in the 4-H Foundation ASAP!) August 1 - audition tape from 4-H soloist, duet, ensemble or chorus, singing "I Pledge" centennial theme for the opening ceremony, Sept. 10, new 4-H Centennial Hall, 10:20 am. Send tape, name of member/group, county, and contact information to State 4-H Office. August 15 - Pre-entry due to Kansas State Fair for decorated Hay Bale contest, 1 from each county. Also all other OPEN CLASS entries are due to the State Fair Office. Remember to promote the Governor's Cookie Jar, Scarecrow, and theme floral arrangement that all must use the 4-H Centennial theme this year. Centennial Candle - EVERY COUNTY must have a Centennial
Candle (see instructions on 4-H Centennial Parade - All 4-H members, family members,
leaders, alumni and staff are invited to march in the opening Centennial
parade at the State Fair. Everyone marching will need to wear a shirt that
has a 4-H logo, preferably the 4-H Centennial shirt. Begin gathering at
Gottschalk Park (the open area south of the Fair Administration building,
right inside the main gate) at 9:30 am, Saturday, Sept. 10. We will line up
the 105 Candle Bearers to lead it off, and as we march, we will all chant
this simple phrase, "HEAD, HEART, HANDS, HEALTH, FOREVER 4-H-CLAP, CLAP;
REPEAT". The State 4-H Office is in the process of inviting all Kansas and Kansas federal legislators, the Governor, her Cabinet, State Fair Board, 4-H Foundation Board, and selected University dignitaries to the Opening Ceremony. New projects and ideas in the works -The 4-H Marketing Action Team and Extension Communications are working to put together a National 4-H Week press kit, with a Centennial focus. Power Cat/Clover Pin - The College of Agriculture and 4-H are collaborating to design, order and give away at the 2005 and 2006 State Fairs, a specially designed metal pin that will feature both the Power Cat and the 4-H Clover! In addition to the pin being given out at the Ag and K-State R&E booths in the Pride of Kansas building, we will begin to hand them out to participants and those gathered for the opening Centennial Ceremony at the 4-H Centennial Hall, and through the rest of the Fair. 4-H Centennial Profiles - Nancy Peterson plans to write a human interest story, profiling 4-H alumni/leaders/members who have been successful in their career and life because of their 4-H experience. She is hoping to do about 24 of these, with releases throughout the year, at the first and 15th of each month. Prairie Home Companion -This will be a live broadcast from the KSF Grandstand on Saturday, Sept. 10. Contacts are being made to see how 4-H could be involved as part of the show. Westlake Hardware--For counties who have a Westlake Hardware in their community, they are also celebrating their 100th anniversary. We encourage you to contact them to see if you might collaborate on a joint project. Nancy Peterson suggests that they might help sponsor an ad around the Sept. 10 Centennial kick-of or National 4-H week, or since they sell tools, and 4-H teaches tools for life, they might consider a special discount to 4-H members/families. Thanks to all of you who collected and delivered the brown paper grocery sacks for use at the "Do-Art" activity at the State Fair. I think that we hit the mark! If you have questions, please feel free to contact me, sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu FOREVER 4-H!!! Fisher |

Recruitment Issue Kansas 4-H Journal Recruit
100 new 4-H members during the Centennial year! Why not make it a goal to
increase 4-H membership during this centennial year. To help you, this year's recruitment issue of the Kansas 4-H Journal is written for new parents that are considering 4-H as the youth organization for their children to join. We want all families who receive the 4-H Journal to share it with a new family inviting them to join 4-H. 4-H Marketing Action team members wrote articles, focusing on information that would be helpful to parents as they consider 4-H. Included in the recruitment issue is a "Belong" pull out section that can be taken out of the journal and shared with new families. This pull out section will be available on the State 4-H website beginning August 1 for you to copy in your local office and use to recruit new members. Mack |

Painting Party We would like this to be a family event. Parents and youth are encouraged to come help together. Youth should be teens or at least mature enough to handle the work that will be required without impeding work that others will be doing. All youth are required to have a VIP registered chaperone. Take a look at all the crews and think of which ones you would be willing to work on. When registering, rank the crews you like and “X” the ones you don’t. Please plan to arrive at 4-H Centennial Hall on the State Fairgrounds at 1:00pm on Friday, July 15. Late arrivals are welcomed (as is ALL help) but we need everyone pre-registered so we can get enough food and lodging arrangements. A BBQ supper will be served and a movie will be shown that evening. There will also be free time to visit and make new friends before everyone retires to spend the night in the 4-H Encampment Building. Breakfast will be served Saturday morning before we all go back to work finishing up the remaining jobs Bring a white T-shirt; something old or something new, something that can be painted on by YOU! We’re working on a plan to make our own Painting Party Shirts as you arrive! By the way, ALL the clothes you bring should be old/work clothes. If you have them, please plan to bring your own paint brushes, rollers, tools etc. There is some money available for these expenses, but if we don’t have to spend it on these one-time-use items, that money will be available for other projects. Call it what you will; “Recycling”, “Pre-Cycling” or just plain “Cheap.” The State Fair has agreed to provide lodging free of charge in the 4-H Encampment Building so everyone will need to bring bedding, towels, personal care items, etc. Lastly, we’re asking everyone to bring snacks to share. To register, contact your local Extension Office. Let them know your preferences for work crews, and make sure they have a current, complete copy of your 4-H Participation Form by July 7. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kate Kramer or Justin Wiebers. Kramer/Wiebers |

National Animal Identification System Information for 4-H--USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in collaboration with industry and the states, has been working to develop a national animal identification system (NAIS). The NAIS will be an essential tool for carrying out animal health monitoring and surveillance programs. As it comes online, the system will also ensure rapid disease containment and maximum protection of American poultry and livestock. We want our stakeholders to understand the reasons behind this program, so we are encouraging them to find out more by visiting the NAIS Website and talking to their State veterinarian. APHIS has produced posters carrying this message. 4-H members who exhibit animals are a crucial audience for understanding the NAIS. Please help us get the word out this fair season by hanging up the APHIS posters in livestock barns and exhibition halls, as appropriate. You can order them by sending the amount you need, your street mailing address, and a phone number to nais_info@aphis.usda.gov, or by calling Amy Spillman directly at (301) 734-7253. Amy Spillman |
