4-H TipSheet Changes
We are looking for ways to improve our delivery format of 4-H news and
information and would like your suggestions. We understand the monthly
Tip Sheet has not been available soon enough for the publishing schedules of
some of your local 4-H newsletters. Below are two options we are considering
to deliver information in a more timely manner:
-
Utilizing the Tuesday Letter as our primary means of
keeping you up to date on 4-H news and information with appropriate links
to detailed information.
-
Using the Counties Listserv for other pertinent
information as necessary.
If you have any thoughts or preferences on how you
receive 4-H news and information, please e-mail Karen Knox at
ksknox@ksu.edu by December 1. Your
input will help us in our goal of providing timely and effective delivery of
information to you.

Citizenship) a part of our day-to-day efforts in 4- H youth development.
CHARACTER COUNTS! will address needs of the entire 4-H community including
not only our young people, but staff, volunteer leaders, parents, PDC's,
Boards and the communities at large. Prepare to hear more about this dynamic
character development framework that fits the 4-H delivery models so nicely.
If you can't wait check out

Centennial Service Project
Do not let the 4-H Centennial Celebration end with the State Fair
Celebrations. The Centennial Community Service Project rolled out at the
2005 Kansas State Fair and will continue all year, culminating with the 2006
Kansas State Fair. During the centennial year Kansas 4-Hers, 4-H families,
and 4-H alumni will be challenged to fight hunger by participating in
projects in four major areas:
1) Growing produce that will be donated to local food
banks, soup kitchens, etc.
2) Collect donations of non-perishable food items for local food banks
3) Donate time at local agencies (ex. helping cook and serve meals, stock
shelves, pack boxes, etc.)
4) Collect monetary donations that can be used to purchase perishable food
items.
Please encourage your clubs to use the simple reporting
form to help us arrive at total donations in the four project areas. At the
2006 Kansas State Fair we will report on the total impact of 4-Hers in
helping combating hunger in Kansas. Success stories will also be collected
throughout the year and shared with Kansas 4-H and local news agencies. The
form can be found at:
http://www.kansas4-h.org/Events/Centennial/ServiceProject/projectreport.pdf
We also encourage you to report any Hurricane Relief
Efforts on the report form, just indicate “Hurricane” in the description
section.

On-Line Registration Update
An e-mail was sent to the
counties listserv on Tuesday, October 11 describing how Extension Staff can
access registration lists, set up accounts, and register participants for
events. Since the password was listed in that message, it will not be
available on the web. Many of the most
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
are available from the main page of the registration web site. The link is
at the top, center of the page listed as “FAQ”. As the system is refined,
additional FAQs will be added to the page.

Reaching Out To Military Youth
Kansas 4-H has active clubs on each of our military installations - Fort
Riley, Fort Leavenworth and McConnell Air Force Base. 4-H Youth Development
professionals in Geary, Leavenworth and Sedgwick counties and military youth
service staff have been working together to provide military youth with a
4-H club experience.
Through a new grant called Operation Military Kids (OMK), Kansas 4-H now has
the opportunity to reach out to youth and families of mobilized or deployed
National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers. A state team representing KSR&E,
National Guard, Army Reserve, American Legion and other youth serving
organizations will be attending a national training in late November.
During Annual Conference, Sarah Jones, Army Reserve Children Youth Services
Regional Coordinator, shared issues facing these families and how Extension
can help. Several sessions at KYLF and Kansas City Conference focused on OMK
and creating Hero Packs to share with children with a deployed parent.
More information will continue to be made available if you would like to
become involved.

Strengthening 4-H Clubs Training
Back by popular demand. If you missed the Strengthening 4-H Clubs
Training last year, we are offering it again on Friday, January 6, at
Pottorf Hall, Manhattan or Friday, February 24 at the Southwest Area Office,
Garden City.
Today, 4-H comes in many forms and sizes, but the club model still remains
our flagship program. Plan to join us, as we spend time focusing on
Strengthening 4-H Clubs. The purpose of this training is to strengthen our
capacity to work with adults and youth to develop and support strong,
effective 4-H Clubs. Topics will include the latest research on
characteristics of successful (strong) 4-H Clubs; creating a positive
environment; making club meetings that youth choose to attend and sharing
program management tools for club organization and operation.
You'll go home with new resources and ideas to share with your club leaders.
Registration fee is $20 which includes a resource notebook and lunch. Online
registration will be ready soon, but reserve either January 6 or February 24
on your calendar and plan to attend.
