Centennial Thanks A giant 4-H thank you
to everyone who helped prepare for and/or participate in the Kansas 4-H
Centennial opening ceremony at the State Fair on Saturday, Sept. 10. The
Hutch News reported 1,000 - 1,500 marchers in the Parade, and I believe it.
Your promotion of the parade and getting your county's centennial candle
there was worth all the effort. It really got the attention of many
Fair-goers. We're off to a great start of hundreds of Centennial
celebrations throughout Kansas in the next year.
Special thanks to Office Professionals in the State 4-H
Office for their help and support of this effort--Cheryl Thomas for
developing the web site; Kathy Zimmerman for getting information to you in
the Tip Sheet, and Lori Baker and Cherie Riffey for helping me get organized
and names printed for the parade line-up and candle holders. Thanks to
members of the Centennial Committee, State 4-H Youth Leadership Council and
Collegiate 4-H for assisting with the parade line-up and chant. Thanks to
Jack Lindquist for being the master candle installer (I discovered the
Friday afternoon before that the candle holes I had cut had expanded from
the moisture, and the candles would not fit the holes, to a BIG thanks to
Mitchell, Shawnee county 4-H'er who volunteered to help me take steel rasps
to all 105 holes and ream them out by hand, so Jack could force the candles
in!) Thanks to Lisa Pryor, state office student assistant who handled all
the details at the new 4-H Centennial Hall, while I was getting the parade
ready. Thanks to Jodi Besthorn and Sedgwick county for supplying the extra
standards we needed to rope off everything for the ceremony. Thanks to
Trisha Cash, Marla Day and Dale Anderson for helping hoist and decorate the
giant cake. Jessica Furney, Pottawatomie 4-H member did an absolutely
fabulous rendition of the "I Pledge" song, written by Kathleen Ward. Thanks
to Nancy Peterson, whose devotion to the 4-H cause resulted in the 4-H
recognition at the Governor's Kansas Quarter launch on Friday, (Sherman
county 4-H'er and K-State singer, Darin Richardson lead the crowd in the
singing of "Home on the Range"; the participation of
4-H'er Jamie Smidt on the live broadcast of Prairie Home Companion, and the
writing of about 20 State Fair and Centennial related news releases prior to
the Fair, that are also posted on the State Fair's website. Linda
Sleichter deserves applause for giving leadership from Extension
Communications to create the Marketing Plan for the Centennial and National
4-H Week, specifically for securing the State Fair hand stamps and working
with Steven Graham to get the Power Cat-Clover Centennial pin.
Thanks to the Kansas 4-H Foundation, especially Rhonda Atkinson and Trisha
Cash, for the development, publishing and coordination of the selling of the
third Kansas 4-H cookbook. (It is the sale of the cookbooks that will
finance the Centennial budget!) Thanks to Kathy Lupfer-Nielson for creating
the great historical display at the Fair; and finally to the State Fair
Board and staff who really made the Fair come alive in many ways with our
Centennial theme this year.
We will be keeping you posted about future opportunities and
events, and be watching for the announcement of the Kansas 4-H Hall of Fame,
and plans for the Centennial finale' at the 2006 State Fair. Forever 4-H!

Strengthening 4-H Clubs Training Back by popular
demand. If you missed the Strengthening 4-H Clubs Training last year, we are
offering it again on Friday, January 6, at Pottorf Hall, Manhattan or
Friday, February 24 at the Southwest Area Office, Garden City.
Today, 4-H comes in many forms and sizes, but the club model
still remains our flagship program. Picture a small group of kids working
with at least one caring adult, learning things of interest, developing life
skills and contributing to their community.
Experience tells us it is still relevant to today's youth
and families. Strong management and attention to detail are the
foundation to successful 4-H clubs that meet the needs of members, where
members are eager to join, where families are excited about 4-H and where
members and adults willingly volunteer to work.
Plan to join us, as we spend time focusing on Strengthening
4-H Clubs. The purpose of this training is to strengthen our capacity to
work with adults and youth to develop and support strong, effective 4-H
Clubs. Topics will include the latest research on characteristics of
successful (strong) 4-H Clubs; creating a positive environment; making club
meetings that youth choose to attend and sharing program management tools
for club organization and operation.
You’ll go home with new resources and ideas to share with
your club leaders. Registration fee is $20 which includes lunch. More
details will be sent at a later date, but reserve either
January 6 or February 24 on your calendar and plan to attend.

Centennial Community Service We know Kansas
4-H Clubs are involved in a variety of service projects each year and we
hope Kansas 4-H Clubs are ready to celebrate a year of Community Service to
celebrate 100 years of 4-H. The service project focuses on fighting hunger
in Kansas through, food donations, planting an extra row in your garden to
donate to local agencies, monetary donations or spending time working at
local food pantries or meal sites. Packets were distributed to each local
office at the Kansas State Fair.
All materials, the report form, the logo and the information sheet are
all available on the web.
Please continue to encourage your clubs to report their
work to fight hunger in your local community. At next year’s State fair we
will report back what has happened across the State.
With the tremendous needs in the gulf area, we also
encourage your clubs to be involved with Hurricane Katrina relief and report
that as well, just note that on your report form.
If you have questions, please contact Evelyn Neier or
Beth Hinshaw. Neier/Hinshaw |

Hope Venture Grants for Youth Ages 13-20.
Several of you have inquired about additional opportunities for youth to be
engaged in the relief efforts in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. Perhaps
you might be interested in reviewing the following information and the
potential opportunity for your 4-H youth program.
Subject: Sharing Information: Hope Venture Grants
Many young people have already teamed up with friends to do
something to help the people affected by Hurricane Katrina. If you know of a
young person trying to get a relief or fundraising organization off the
ground, Youth Venture can get you started. MTV and Youth Venture are
offering Hope Venture Grants of up to $1,000 to support young people who
want to launch a venture -- an organization, club, or business -- that will
aid those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
First priority will be given to proposals that support the
creation of sustainable ventures that aid the citizens and communities who
have lost so much from this disaster. A second priority will be proposals to
start organizations solely for the purpose of raising and distributing funds
for those in need.
Hope Venture Grants will be offered every week for the next
six months to groups of two or more young people (ages 13-20) with the most
compelling venture ideas to assist the people and communities affected.
Applications for one-time projects will not be considered.
Read the
Official Rules before applying. View and print the
Application. For tips and tools on starting your venture visit
Youth Venture. Questions: email
ny@youthventure.org
with Hope Venture Grants in subject line.
