Marketing Kansas 4-H Hot off the press! A new marketing tool is now available.  You can download this four page "Belong" recruitment tool and make your own black and white copies. We hope you will find it useful in recruiting new members.

This document is also included in the recruitment issue in the August Kansas 4-H Journal. We hope current 4-H families will share the 4-H Journal or at least the insert as they recruit new families.

Another new item we’ve created is a fun-filled 4-H Activity Page. This colorful activity page will make it’s debut at the Kansas State Fair to help young fair goers celebrate the centennial and learn more about 4-H. View the two sided document Information on how you can order copies.

The National 4-H Week Kit is now available. The kit contains a wide variety of resources including activities, bookmarks, brochure, certificates, fact sheets, logos, news releases, newspaper ads, placemats, posters, proclamations, and radio PSAs. Mack

Parking at the State Fair  There are only approximately 100 "Green Lot" Parking spaces on the North side of 4-H Centennial Hall and the 4-H Encampment Building. With more than 100 Extension Agents, 60 judges, plus other support and resource people, you can see how it will be important for us to be respectful of each others' needs and move our vehicles out as soon as possible to allow others (especially judges) to come in and park.

Check In:
The parking spaces north of 4-H Centennial Hall will be considered an unloading zone on Friday, September 9. The spaces right against the building will only be available as 15 minute unloading zones with volunteers serving as "Skycaps" to help you unload. If you park in these closest spots, we ask that you unload your vehicle and move it out to the free public parking lots, and come back to check in your 4-H members' exhibits. State and Area 4-H faculty will be parking in the free lots to provide additional space, and we ask that everyone else provide this same courtesy to their co-workers and to judges.

4-H Centennial Hall will be open Thursday, September 8 from 11:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. to receive large home environment, electric or woodworking exhibits. All other exhibits are to be entered from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9.

Release:
Exhibits will be released from 4-H Centennial Hall, Poultry, and Rabbit Building beginning at 6:00pm on Sunday, September 19. As we learned last year, beginning at 4:00pm until 6:00pm on Sunday the 19th, no one will be allowed in Gate 3. So plan to arrive early in the day with an all-day parking pass (Delivery/Release tags are only valid for 30 minutes) or plan to come in after 6:00pm. Agents who wish to avoid the crowds and working on Sunday, may pick up
their members' exhibits on Monday, September 19 from 8:00 to 10:30am. Please let Justin Wiebers or Beth Hinshaw know ahead of time if you will be coming on Monday. Hang Tags will not be required Monday.

Delivery/Release Tags:
Please keep in mind that Delivery/Release hang tags are for people who are bringing or picking up exhibits and are only valid for 30 minutes. Enter at Gate #3 (off Main Street) for 4-H Centennial Hall, Gate 6 for Dog Show, Gate 10 for Horses, or Gate 11 for Livestock. Exhibitors will be allowed to pick up or deliver supplies and equipment, and then must move their vehicle in one of the free lots outside the fairgrounds. Vehicles displaying a "Delivery" hang tag will be towed at the owner's expense if it is on the fairgrounds after the allotted 30 minutes.  An admission ticket is required for each person in any vehicle entering the fairgrounds. CENTENNIAL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT - For the past 100 years Kansas 4-Hers have served Kansas through community service projects. In honor of this history of service learning a statewide community service project has been selected. The focus of this project is fighting hunger on the local level.

The Centennial Community Service Project will roll out at the 2005 Kansas State Fair and continue all year, culminating with the 2006 Kansas State Fair. During the centennial year Kansas 4-Hers, 4-H families, and 4-H alumni will be challenged to fight hunger in their local communities by participating in projects in four major areas:

1) Grow produce that will be donated to local food banks, soup kitchens, etc.

2) Collect donations of non-perishable food items for local food banks

3) Donate time at local agencies (ex. helping cook and serve meals, stock shelves, pack boxes, etc.)

4) Collect monetary donations that can be used to purchase perishable food items.

At the end of the State Fair agents will receive packets with information on how to promote the program. The packet will also include a simple reporting form to help us arrive at total donations in the four project areas. At the 2006 Kansas State Fair we will report on the total impact of 4-Hers in helping combat hunger in Kansas. Success stories will also be collected throughout the year and shared with Kansas 4-H and local news agencies.   Neier/ Hinshaw

Kansas 4-H Meat Goat Workshop  August 27, 2005 at KSU. The first ever Meat Goat training in Kansas 4-H is scheduled Aug. 27 with registration in Weber Hall beginning at 8:30am. Pre-registration to Cliff Spaeth, 213 Weber Hall, Manhattan, Kansas 66506 is requested by August 24th to insure a sack lunch. Registration fee is $15.

MORE Candle information you need to know!!!  Thanks to an inquiring agent, I was reminded that I needed to let you know about picking up the candle after the Fair and plans for next year. Also, I am in the process of making the candle holders. I am drilling a 2 3/8 " hole through a 2x6" board. The candles will "set" in the hole, SO IT IS CRITICAL THAT THE BOTTOM 1/2" TO 1" OF THE PVC PIPE IS CLEAN FROM ANY ATTACHMENTS SO THAT IT WILL FIT!!! Jack Lindquist will be assisting the 4-H'ers to get their candle in place as quickly as possible. Each county's name will be attached on the board in front of their candle. The board will be painted 4-H green.  Remember, your candle bearer will have your county's candle and is to meet at Gottschalk Park on Saturday, September 10th, by 9:30 am, to line up for the Parade.

CENTENNIAL CANDLE PICKUP  Because you may want to use your candle during the year, and we don't want to have to store them, you will need to pick up your candle at the end of the Fair, with all your other exhibits. Rather than taking them out of the holder, we will just leave them there and you can pick yours out.

2006 CENTENNIAL CLOSING CEREMONY  A closing ceremony will be held at the 2006 State Fair in 4-H Centennial Hall. We want to symbolically pass the candle on to signify the bright future of Kansas 4-H. Our plan is for you to name a Centennial Hall of Fame adult from your county, and that person, or their representative, plus a 4-H member of your choosing, will need to attend the 2006 Fair (the exact date has not yet been decided.) The adult will take the candle from their county and "pass it on" to the 4-H'er from their county during the ceremony. The Kansas 4-H Centennial Hall of Fame process is being developed by Phyllis Kriesel and Pam Van Horn, using the National HOF as a model. It will be posted on the Centennial website in October. At the close of the ceremony, we will serve K-State Call Hall ice cream and 4-H clover cookies until the supply runs out! That will close the Centennial year.

See you at the Fair!   Fisher

COUNTRY BOYS Premiere  January 9-11, 2006, COUNTRY BOYS is an inspirational and gripping coming-of-age story about two boys from Eastern Kentucky's Appalachian region. The individual stories of Cody Perkins and Chris Johnson reveal two classmates at The David School, a private alternative high school who, while they inhabit the same world, are light years apart.

Filmmaker David Sutherland interweaves the distinct narratives of two at-risk adolescents grappling with and overcoming daunting emotional and physical obstacles related to their unique family lives and the economic circumstances of this region. At the same time, their individual stories offer valuable insights into the universally complex problems faced by all teenagers and those who love and support them. COUNTRY BOYS will premiere on the PBS series FRONTLINE on January 9-11, 2006, 9-11 p.m. ET/PT.

The COUNTRY BOYS Community Engagement Campaign was created to build awareness and community participation in support of youth. ITVS (Independent Television Service, funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting) is working with key national partners and public television stations in goal areas involving mentoring, youth development, education, boys' development, substance abuse prevention and working with youth in high risk environments. National 4-H Headquarters, U.S. Department of Agriculture is a partner in the Country Boys community engagement campaign.

We encourage Extension faculty who work with youth to review the Country Boys web site and to identify strategies for bringing together 4-H, FCS, CYFAR faculty and collaborators around critical issues of adolescents. As the campaign develops, we will be distributing information about resource which will be available to support such efforts. There is also a link to the Country Boys site on CYFERnet under Announcements. McNally
