4-H Discovery Days Need Your Help on May 30 and 31!
We are looking for classes and tours both on campus and in the Manhattan area.  We want to offer sessions related to academics, careers, 4-H projects, life skills, local businesses, historic sites, recreation, and hobbies.  Classes with the most appeal to these 13 to 18 year old teens will be action-oriented with youth involvement and varied teaching methods.

This is a great way to reach out and affect the lives of young people by helping them connect with future careers, interests and the K-State community!  If you have a topic or know of a tour location that may be of interest to 13-18 year olds, please consider submitting a proposal.

We’re currently only about half way to the bare minimum number of 600 spaces needed during each workshop session.

As of January 10 (nearly a month after our original deadline), we have:
304 spaces on Wednesday Afternoon
292 spaces on Thursday morning (includes 32 spaces in all day classes)
377 spaces on Thursday Afternoon (includes 32 spaces in all day classes)

Leaders are needed for classes and tours on Wednesday, May 30 from 1:30 to 3:30pm and Thursday, May 31 from 9:30 to 11:30am and 1:30 to 3:30pm.  Thursday classes can also be offered from 9:30am through 3:30pm.  For 2 hour classes, you might consider leading the same class or tour more than once.

Last year, registration materials were delayed because we had to recruit additional workshops for the number of delegates!  If you have not already submitted proposals for classes at 4-H Discovery Days, we would truly appreciate your consideration.

Adult volunteer instructors attending the conference who reside outside Manhattan and stay in a K-State residence hall during 4-H Discovery Days are eligible to have $50.00 of their registration fee waived if they teach at least four hours (two 2-hour classes or one 4 hour class).  Youth who teach or assist with classes are not eligible for scholarships.

It would be greatly appreciated if you would complete the Microsoft Word form and e-mail it as an attachment to me.  The deadline for Class/tour proposal forms has been extended to Monday, January 22.  Please do not delay.

As much work as possible will be done via teleconferences and electronic media; however, at least two face-to-face meetings are required.  Mileage will be reimbursed to non-staff adults and teens selected for the taskforce at the rate of $.37/mile.

Please share this opportunity with your 4-H volunteers, teens and college-aged recent 4-H alumni.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at (785) 532-0747 or ggerhard@ksu.edu.

Keeping Today’s Volunteer Interested and Involved
Steve McCurley, (Nationally recognized expert in Volunteer Development) says "Avoid the Black Hole, do not let new volunteers volunteer then do nothing.". When new volunteers volunteer, carefully explain the time line and screening actions (VIP) and keep them informed. McCurley says, "Get them doing something in the first month. If you miss this window their success rate will be diminished." He further says "nobody volunteers to fail". We need to be sure we do not set them up to fail.

As soon as you can in the VIP process give them something (information, a book, a progress letter or ????). Also, move the VIP process along so they can get to work for 4-H as soon as possible.

VIP Annual Renewal
There are many advantages to the local 4-H program in having 4-H Volunteers renew annually using the VIP Annual Renewal Form. The information gained from the renewal process will help manage the 4-H Program more effectively. For instance, one advantage is, it gives the office a clear picture of who is intending to do what in the local 4-H program this year.

The form is available from Distribution, (form 4H953). It is also available on the web for download from the publications library, (http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/library/4h_y2/4H953.pdf) or from the State 4-H Web site in the VIP Resources section. Curriculum Q and A:
Update on the National process of switching from 4HCCS to the National 4-H Council.

    1. What will happen to the incorporated entity, "4-H CCS"?

    • National 4-H CCS will move forward with plans for dissolution - it is proposed this will be concluded by April 1, 2007.

    2. What is the status of the transition between Zurcher Education & Design and National 4-H Council?

    • Tom Zurcher of Zurcher Education and Design will submit to National 4-H Council prior to December 31, 2006 all information, data, and other materials that are the property of CCS.
    • The contract ends with Zurcher Education and Design on December 31, 2006.
    • Effective January 1, 2007, National 4-H Council will assume fiscal responsibility for the CCS entity.
    • CCS shopping cart and website functions will continue without interruption.
    • Materials will continue to be distributed from the University of Minnesota; in addition, there are other subcontracts that will also continue in support of the curriculum system.
    • A Transition Team consisting of members of the 4-H CCS Board and staff from National 4-H Headquarters and National 4-H Council has formed to guide the transition process over the next few months.
    • National 4-H Council has advertised, interviewed, and hired an individual to manage the curriculum process into the future. This individual will start January 2, 2007.

    3. How will this new curriculum system be supported financially?

    • National 4-H Council will assume expenses related to the management position, marketing, distribution, fiduciary, day to day operations, resource development and legal issues for a national 4-H curriculum system.
    • Funds currently dedicated to curriculum development under CCS, and not encumbered for other expenses, will be transferred to an account within National 4-H Council dedicated to curriculum development. This would be considered a restricted donation to National 4-H Council.
    • Additional funds in support of curriculum development will be generated as they have in the past, through revenues from sales of products and from resource development under the leadership of Jennifer Sirangelo.

    4. Who will own the curriculum currently in the 4-H CCS catalog?

    • Any current curriculum that is still in production, or in the process of being produced, will transfer to National 4-H Council.
    • In the future, we will not be signing contracts for ownership of these materials but will move to a licensing agreement that will license National 4-H Council to produce the materials for a specified time period. Ownership of the intellectual property will be retained by the lead author or the institution.
    • CCS will need to dispose of (or give away) any curriculum materials that do not have "clean" intellectual property. We have discovered that we have curricula that do not have appropriate Intellectual Property releases from authors or contributors. This is a liability that was recently brought to the attention of the board. The Transition Team is working to identify materials which will need to be released from our catalog and will share that information with the system as it is completed.

    5. What will a dissolution plan include?

    * A dissolution plan will be written to include the following:

    • The board intends to dissolve the N4-HCCS entity
    • The board intends to pay all debts associated with N4-HCCS
    • The board will need to dispose of (or give away) any curriculum materials that are perceived not to have "clean" intellectual property(IP). We have discovered that we have a significant number of curricula that does not have in place appropriate IP releases from authors or contributors. This is a liability that was recently brought to the attention of the board.
    • Upon legal dissolution, the board will transfer all assets to National 4-H Council. Any remaining funds (once financial obligations have been satisfied) will be transferred to National 4-H Council to be held in a permanently dedicated account for future curriculum development.

    6. Will my state still be able to purchase and receive curriculum after April 1?

    • Curriculum already produced will still be available (as long as the intellectual property releases are clear) through the National 4-H Supply Service.
    • There are seven curricula in development or revision at this time and anticipated to be in production next year.
    • A call for proposals for new curricula will be released around the planned Curriculum Summit (anticipated in May-June).
    • As of April 1, 2007 (following the transition) all states will be considered members of the new National 4-H Curriculum System.

Chaperones Sought by IPC for Japan and Finland Trips
The 4-H International Programs Committee (IPC), a collaboration of state 4-H programs that conduct international exchanges, is seeking chaperones for 2007 groups to Japan and Finland.  Chaperones may be staff or volunteers, should be active in 4-H and have shown interest in exchanges in the state.  They should show leadership, counseling, and management skills.  They may not go on the trip the year their own children participate.   Chaperones pay a $500 program fee and the chaperone to Finland must also provide his or her own transportation to and from Detroit, where the group will have pre-trip orientation.

The chaperone application for Finland is due in Seattle by February 1 and the one for Japan is due there March 1.  Both applications require a local agent signature and must be interviewed and approved in Kansas first.  The application form can be found on the 4-H World Citizenship web page http://www.Kansas4-H.org/worldcitizenship.  Contact Mary Kay Munson at munsonm@nqks.com or call 785-238-3631 for more information or assistance with an application.  There may still be an opening for the chaperon of the Australia group sponsored by Wisconsin.  The deadline is February 1. Contact Mary Kay if there is interest.

Science, Engineering & Technology - Digital Media Show-And-Tell
From 4-H clubs to summer camps to athletic teams, every youth program has something that makes it special. While one group is painting a mural or designing a fair exhibit, another group is planting trees or building a web site. Some youth keep returning to their program to see their friends, to learn new skills, to explore nature or all of the above. What about you?

During CYFERnet's Digital Media Show-and-Tell contest, you can let the world know what makes your CYFAR and 4-H program special. Your mission is to use digital photography, audio, video or a mix of digital media to answer the question, "Why am I here?" In other words, what do you enjoy most about your program and what benefits keep you coming back for more?

Work independently or as a team to show off your art, communication and technology skills while telling your story. CYFERnet will post submissions online for the public to enjoy. Our panel of judges will announce and recognize the winners at the May 2007 CYFAR conference. Visit: http://www.cyfernet.org/4htech/missions.html for complete details.
