Kansas Youth Leadership Forum Presenters Needed - It is time to recruit instructors for the 6th Annual Kansas Youth Leadership Forum, to be held November 18-20 at Rock Springs 4-H Center.

This conference, designed for youth, ages 14 - 18, will include speakers, track sessions, consulting groups and the election of the 2006 Kansas State 4-H Youth Leadership Council.

We're recruiting proposals for workshop sessions for Saturday, November 19.  Topics should center on leadership.  Some ideas might include, but are not limited to community service, citizenship, communication, conflict management, ethics, motivation, decision making, leading by example, time management, international citizenship, multi cultural studies, diversity, business etiquette and getting involved after high school. The Kansas State 4-H Youth Council members hope that you (or one of your volunteers) will be interested in sharing your expertise or talent through this opportunity.

You will find the letter and proposal form on the KYLF web page.

Proposals are due to the State 4-H office by July 10, or if you have questions, contact Beth Hinshaw, bhinshaw@oznet.ksu.edu  or Justin Wiebers jwiebers@oznet.ksu.edu  Hinshaw/Wiebers

Kansas State Fair Letter -  All counties should have received a letter dated May 4, 2005 from the State Fair!  This multi-colored letter contains valuable information about:

*Gate Admissions
*Parking Hangtags and costs
*Encampment Reservations
*Grand Drive Changes
*4-H/FFA Livestock Entry Form
*Agricultural Challenge of Champions
*Hay Bale Decoration Contest

Most of this information is also on the State Fair Website.  This is the only mailing you will receive with this information, so save it or request it from the State Fair if you did not receive it!!!

Gate Admissions:  Please order what your county needs!!  The 4-H Department will only provide Gate Admission tickets to those volunteers and Agents who have entered volunteer requests via the KSFAIR entry system Volunteer Class. These entries should be made by August 15, 2005.  Adams/Wiebers

Kansas State Fair Youth Premium Books:  Plans are for the 2005 Kansas State Fair Premium books to be ready for distribution during 4-H Discovery Days.  Agents are asked to pick up their books at Registration this May 31 from 6-8PM.  If you are not attending 4-H Discovery Days, make arrangements with someone from another county to pick them up for you.

As a cost cutting measure, the book has been combined into one 8 1/2 x 11 book.  You will receive copies for office staff, but there will not be extra copies for 4-H leaders and 4-H families.  The book is designed so that sections can be copied as needed.  Is is also available on the Kansas State Fair website.

Because all of the general guidelines are listed in the book, it is important that exhibitors read all of the rules and regulations before exhibiting. Adams/Wiebers

State 4-H Horse Project Coordinator Needed!! Since Kelsey Nordyke has accepted the 4-H Agent position in Cowley County, we are looking for someone to coordinate 4-H horse activities on a part time basis. Contact Jim Adams for details or to forward names of potential coordinators. Adams

4-H Centennial Reminder and Request - Just a note to remind counties to bring all the brown paper grocery sacks they have collected to Discovery Days. These will be collected and taken to the State Fair to use in the "Do Art" activity to make Clover Hats.

Thanks to Andrea Schmidt for her creativity in developing the Centennial Officer Installation Ceremony that is now posted on the web site. Phyllis Kriesel and Pam VanHorn are adapting the National 4-H Hall of Fame nomination process to use as our Kansas Hall of Fame form, and will be ready in October for your use.

Lindy Lindquist has agreed to help me put together the opening ceremony for the State Fair. Extension Communications has been working with some of us to develop a Centennial Marketing plan, which you will benefit from soon. Evelyn Neier and Beth Hinshaw are developing the community service component around a local food drive project. Thanks to these colleagues, and all of you who are involved in making the 4-H Centennial happen.

NEW REQUEST - We were unsuccessful in getting any 4-H'ers to perform on the free stages at the State Fair this year (this will still be an option in 2006 however), but I am encouraging you to encourage your 4-H members to apply to sing the Centennial song, "I Pledge" at the opening ceremony at the State Fair. It can be a solo, duet, small ensemble, or chorus. This will be the closing part of the ribbon cutting/opening ceremony outside the south entrance to the new 4-H Centennial Hall. Application is simple. Just have interested performers send an audition cassette or CD of them singing the song, include their name(s), County/District, address and phone number. Please send to the State 4-H Office BY AUGUST 1, to my attention.

Thanks for your help in making this happen. Even if you did not have many sing this at your 2005 4-H Club Days, you probably know the good vocalists in your program, please give them a personal call of notice and encouragement. This will be a critical part of involving 4-H members in the ceremony, and is fitting that the song should be performed. Thanks, Steve Fisher

National 4-H Competitive Event Eligibility - Please keep the letter of May 9, 2001, detailing National 4-H Competitive Event Eligibility, handy as you select participants for state contests. If you have team members who are taking college level classes while still in high school, or work with community college judging teams, this may impact them.  If you have a community college in your county, please make the coaches aware of the new guidelines which took effect January 1, 2002.  Adams
State Horse Judging Contest:  The State Horse Judging Contest will be held at Weber Hall Arena, June 28, 2005.  The information and registration sheets are on the State 4-H Website.  The deadline for registration is at 5PM June 7.  No Achievement Level Testing is required for this contest!  Adams
District Horse Shows. 4-H'ers must have completed their respective level testing prior to the entry deadline for their district show. Agents: Please encourage your 10 and older 4-H'ers to complete their testing early as the State 4-H Office will have one less office professional and fewer work hours for student assistant after June 1.  Adams

Animals and Product Sales - Thanks for your support for this fund raiser for the State 4-H Youth Council and the Kansas 4-H Foundation.

By Discovery Days we should have in some of the Bandana Buddy animals, ornaments, socks and note cards.  We still have natural animals and ornaments, hats, visors, and totes available.   You can purchase items at Discovery Days or by mail.

Scroll to order forms and click on the appropriate form. Hinshaw/Cash

State Fair Photography Exhibits Changes Update -  As previously mentioned the new size for the mat board is 11" X 12.5". There will be a downsized photo ID form to fit on the smaller mat board. This photo ID form will be in the State Fair information package to come out of the State 4-H Office in early June. (If you need the form earlier, please contact me.) Photos should be mounted one inch (1") from the top, previously they were mounted 1.5" down).

If your county’s photo display system is constructed based on the 11 X 14 size mat board, and you do not wish to change it, there is an option for you. You can have all county entry photos mounted on 11 X 14 mat boards, display them as usual and then just cut down (to the 11 X 12.5 size) the mat boards that will be going on to state fair. Photos should still be mounted 1" from the top of the mat board.

Also watch for details of a new state fair entry label system for photography exhibits. Photography will be piloting a new system for state fair entry identification. Again, details will be in the state fair information package available on the 4-H website. Buchele

VIP Review and Revision Task Force - The VIP R & R Task Force will be meeting May 18 - 19. We ask for your help now to make our output the best, most usable and valuable to you that we can. Please share your questions, comments, concerns and experiences with the present system and support materials with the Task Force ASAP. To quote (more or less), Dean Cholick, "The quality of decisions is directly related to the quality and quantity of information we get from you." Please help us by sharing with the Task Force. Task Force members are Sarah Maass, Gwen Spade, Pam Van Horn, Byron Hale, Stephanie Einspahr, Diane Mack and Rod Buchele. Feel free to contact any of the members.  Buchele

Campference - Mark you calendars - September 30 – October 2, 2005, a brand new event designed for the future of Kansas 4-H Leaders will commence!   Campference, sponsored by Kansas Youth 4-H Council, will focus on 4-H'ers, aged 11-13, and the fundamentals of life as a Leader.

Participants will experience the feel of a conference at Rock Springs 4-H Center, through workshops that will inform them of opportunities in the 4-H program, get them up and moving while learning leadership skills, and how to interact with others.

Participants will be able to meet other "betweenagers" across the state, and help to shape this exciting program for years to come.  So tell your 11-13 year olds to save the date for the first Campference!  Additional information will be available in June.  Matt Felzke-Campference Chair / Hinshaw
