Kansas 4-H Ambassador Training for 2008

The Kansas 4-H Ambassador Action Team will be conducting its annual 4-H ambassador training February 22-23, 2008, at the Rock Springs 4-H Center near Junction City.  Please note a major date shift from March to the fourth weekend of February.  The program has been moved to avoid conflicting with school spring break dates.  We hope this will help counties/units to be able to send their ambassador teams and advisors to this valuable training.  More information and on-line registration will be coming in December.  The 2008 theme is Ambassadors Piece It All Together.  Please save the dates and communicate them to your 4-H ambassadors and adult advisors. Norway Added to 4-H Exchange Destinations for 2008

In addition to Australia, Costa Rica, Finland and Japan,  we now offer 4-H members the opportunity to spend a month in Norway next summer hosted by Norway 4H.  Like the others Kansas is offering, this exchange will be organized by the 4-H International Programs Committee and will be a chaperoned group made up of 4-H’ers from participating U.S. states.  Norske 4-H has been active since the 1920’s, so we know it will be a good program. Tentative dates for the exchange are from July 5-August 5 with a three-week home stay and one week at Nordic 4-H Camp, which includes 4-H members from the Scandinavian countries.  When more details are available,  they will be posted at www.Kansas4-H.org/worldcitizenship.  Let 4-H members, ages 15-18, know of this new opportunity.  Applications for outbound exchanges are due November 2, but we can try to work with interested 4-H’ers who find out about exchanges too late to make that date.  Please ask them to contact Mary Kay Munson at 785-238-3631 or via email.

Counties/Districts Needed for 2008 Kansas 4-H Japanese Exchange

This summer inbound program which Kansas has conducted with LABO and LEX in Japan since 1977 is still seeking counties to participate in 2008.  Based on earlier county/district responses, Kansas has committed to hosting a specific number of youth and adult chaperones for the 2008 summer inbound program.  Participating counties get to host a small group of young Japanese teens who are highly motivated to become a member of their Kansas host family and to learn English.  Kansas 4-H families have reported many good experiences and say that the program has had a positive impact on their children.

The Japanese will arrive in counties about July 20, 2008, and stay with one family each for around 3 ˝ weeks. There’s still time for your county/unit to get involved.  Participating counties/units must locate a volunteer coordinator who then manages the recruitment and screening of five to six host families, and organizes local activities during the stay.  Training, resource materials and some expense money are available for the coordinators and agents.  Extension agents oversee the program and may be as active as they wish in its conduct.

If you think your county might be interested, or to find out more details about your county/district hosting Japanese youth from 12-18 years-old in 2008, contact Rose Scott: rose@threeriversinc.org, or call Rose at 785-388-2009 or 785-565-3197 (cell).   Please consider trying this popular program this upcoming year.
