Dog Judge's Certification Training Dog Judge's Certification Training, Jan. 26-27, 2008, Finney Co.4-H Building, Garden City. Registrations due online by Jan.18, 2008 The Dog Care and Training Action Team is beginning the process of
re-certifying judges who had training before 2001. This year will be the best
opportunity for those in western Kansas to re-certify. The plan is for judges
to re-certify every six years when the training is held in their part of the
state. Remember that local 4-H leaders and older members have indicated great
benefits by observing the training to learn what judges are looking for in the
various divisions of the shows. Information and registration information may
be found under "What's Hot" on the State 4-H website.

Kansas 4-H Venturers Headed to New Mexico in
2008! Kansas 4-H Venturers will be joining the Arkansas 4-H High Adventure Program for a 9-day backpacking adventure in the Pecos Wilderness Area of North Central New Mexico, July 29-August 6th. Both programs are designed for teens (age 14 before January 1, 2008) and adults who are interested in and have a passion for outdoor adventure experiences. The challenge this year is backpacking 30-40 miles carrying a 35-45 lb. backpack at elevations of 9-12,000 feet over 5 days! In addition, they will explore the Capulin Volcano National Monument (New Mexico) and the Palo Duro Canyon (Amarillo, Texas) plus see the Texas Outdoor Musical Drama! The cost of the 9-day trip is $500 and on-line registrations (event website info) are due March 1. Participants must be in top physical condition, pass a sports medical physical and attend the required Shakedown Training, May 30-June 1 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. In addition, participants and their parent should attend one of the Orientation Sessions (March 29 and April 26 --- locations to be determined later). Walk Kansas for Kids
Focuses on Health It is quite simple, leaders or teachers notify the Extension agent that they are interested in participating in the program. The agent gives the leader/teacher access to enter their group into the Walk Kansas website. When in the site agents or the designated leaders/teachers can access participation forms for parents signature, logs for children to keep track of points, and weekly parent health newsletters. State 4-H Horse Panorama – February 9-10, 2008 Rock Springs 4-H Center All registrations must be done on-line or
directly through your local Extension office by January 15, 2008. Pay all fees
and complete your MG-35 (Kansas 4-H Participation Form) for all youth and
ADULTS by this date at your local Extension office. Horse Panorama is the
state qualifying event for Hippology and Quiz Bowl. Horse Jeopardy,
introduced last year for the younger members, is returning by popular demand!

2008 Kansas 4-H Ambassador Training The 2008 Kansas 4-H Ambassador Training will be held Friday evening, February 22, and run through Saturday afternoon, February 23, at Rock Springs 4-H Center. The workshop is for all Kansas County or District 4-H Ambassadors, their adult advisors, and Extension staff. Some of the features of this year's training include a motivational speaker and mixer and specific training sessions for advisors and hands-on workshops for ambassadors. Participants will also experience a dance, movie and games on Friday evening. Cloverbuds Excitement!!! Excitement is building and many of you are ready to get started in creating Cloverbuds programs! However, as you start planning, please take time to review the Kansas 4-H Youth Development Policies concerning 4-H participation especially as it pertains to age. Section 502, 5 and 6 year olds, states "Children younger than 5 may not participate in the 4-H program. The decision to permit the participation of youth age 5 and 6 in a "Cloverbuds" lies with the Extension Board". Any programming under age 5 is not considered 4-H and will not be supported by KSRE. Short-Term Volunteering - source Natl Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre, Singapore, 2002 “For the non-volunteers who are very likely/likely/may volunteer in the future: * 29% prefer commitments of less than 3 months * 20% prefer commitments of between 3 and 6 months” The short term mind set: * They only intend to volunteer for a short, defined period of time * Want to retain control of commitment * Unfamiliar with agency or cause * Little previous experience with volunteering * They aren’t going to change - you’ll have to What opportunities is 4-H making for these potential volunteers? Volunteer Development What one or two things (Vital Behaviors) that if your 4-H Leaders did them consistently, would make their 4-H Clubs much better? Why are they not doing those things? Is the reason because they are not motivated to do these things, because they do not know either to do these things or how to do them (knowledge or capacity) or both? What can you do to motivate the volunteers to do the Vital Behaviors you have identified? What can you do to be sure they have the knowledge necessary to do the Vital Behaviors? Blast into the Third
Annual SpaceTech Educators’ Workshop. Cost for the one-day event is $55.00 and registration is due by January 15, 2008. The registration fee covers two in-depth workshops, lunch, breaks, and materials. Participants who are registered by the January 15th deadline will receive 4-H materials as part of the registration fee for their two sessions. Participants will get to attend two of the following eight in-depth workshops:
Basic—Work with a mother-daughter team as they make stars enjoyable for all ages. Learn how to make a mobile planetarium, and take star gazing to a new level of enjoyment. Advanced—A mother-daughter team will help you develop a PowerPoint presentation as you learn the “ins and outs” of telescopes and lenses. This will help each participant with club and county presentations, and providing resources to help with future activities.
Basic—Explore the new advancements in aviation at the K-State Salina Campus. Talk with the lead mechanic from the world record setting Global Flyer Team. Find out how to incorporate new ideas into your activities. Advanced—Learn about basic electrical circuits. Get acquainted with the composites of fiberglass, carbon fiber and aramid (Kevlar®).
Basic—Talk with experienced youth about the NXT Robot® from the minds at Legos®. Learn how to program the Mindstorms® robots with the help of the SpaceTech youth. Advanced—Further explore the NXT Robot® as the father-daughter instructor team helps you discover the excitement, develop the skills and experience the fun in a world of robotics.
Basic—Learn how a rocket works, and learn skills to teach in beginning rocketry. The session will include construction of simple rockets and kit rockets. Basic judging information, state fair rules, NAR and FAA rules will be shared. Advanced—Find out about designing a rocket, single use and reload engines, advanced construction techniques and rules from the National Association of Rocketry (NAR). Wichita Garden Show 4-H Photography
Extravaganza The annual 4-H Photography Extravaganza will be Friday evening, March 7th and Saturday March 8th at the Wichita Garden Show. Information will be on the web at www.kansas4-h.org, What’s Hot or at: http://www.wichitagardenshow.com/photography.html. Discount tickets to the Garden show tickets will be $2.00 and only provided for those who register by Feb. 15, 2008. A great slate of activities are planned for participants including; youth
photography workshops, the chance to meet with a photography judge to have two
photos critiqued, the Photography Judging Contest, adult workshops (including
a mini judging contest) and the very special opportunity to take photos of the
Garden Show exhibits after all others have left the show late the evening of
March 7th . Participants can then enter their four best photos in the Garden
Show photography contest. Participants do not have to be enrolled in the
photography project to participate. |

Bees, Inc. To interested 4-H'ers: The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc., is sponsoring the 2008 4-H Essay Contest. This year's selected topic/title is, "The Results of Honey Bee Pollination in My Community". The final essay should range between 750 to 1000 words in length. Multi-County Photography Workshop The Shawnee County 4-H Photography Group will be sponsoring a Multi-County Photography Workshop and Photography Judging Contest, April 6, 2008 at the Auburn Community Center. Images of Aging photography contest. The theme of the contest is "Working Past
Retirement". Winning photos will receive cash prizes and be used on the Center

Annual Check-ups How are the 4-H Clubs doing? Are members participating? Are guests being introduced? Are members presenting demonstrations? Are the members talking? These are questions you and the leaders might want to know. If the 4-H Clubs need an annual check up you might suggest the 4-H Club use the 4-H Club Meeting Check List found at http://www.kansas4-h.org/Resources/Clubs/clbmtgcklist.wpd. Club leaders could provide members, leaders and parents with the check up form and review the responses or send the forms to the Extension Office for you review and provide feedback.
