Introducing the 2008 Kansas 4-H Venturers Program Trip

July 29-August 6, 2008

The Kansas 4-H Venturers Program will be joining the Arkansas 4-H High Adventure Program in the Pecos Wilderness Area in New Mexico in 2008! Both programs are designed for teens and adults who are interested in and have a passion for outdoor adventure experiences, including backpacking, canoeing and rafting. Since its inception in 1997, the Kansas 4-H Venturers Program is known for its emphasis on leadership development, youth and adult partnerships and low impact camping techniques in wilderness settings. What: Backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness Area, north central New Mexico with Arkansas 4-H! The 9-day trip includes 5 days of backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness area in New Mexico, located in both the Carson and Santa Fe National Forests. Unique dimensions to the trip include exploring the Capulin Volcano National Monument in northern New Mexico, exploring and touring the Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo, Texas and attending the Texas Outdoor Musical Drama. Plus, you’ll prepare 15 meals in the outdoor environment — either on the road trip or in wilderness areas!

Who: Teens and adults who want to experience backpacking in a wilderness setting .... plus.... seek a challenge that requires mental and physical skills in leadership, teamwork, outdoor cookery, safety and coping with nature’s elements! Maximum size of the Kansas group is 24 participants, to be filled on a first-come first-serve basis. Note: Adults registering after March 1 will be placed on a waiting list.

  • Youth: Must be 14 years of age before January 1, 2008 or have completed 8th grade by June, 2008. Must complete a sports medical physical.
  • Adult: Must be Registered VIP through local extension office, willing to work in partnership with teens, loves the outdoors. Must complete a sports medical physical.
  • Important Dates:

  • March 1 On-line Registrations Due (There is currently a waiting list. Call the Kansas 4-H office to reserve your spot on the list.)
  • March 1 $200 deposit due in local Extension Office
  • March 29 Orientation -- Participant & Parent(s) – locations to be determined at a later date
  • May 1 $300 fee payment and other required forms due
  • May 30-June 1 Shakedown Training — Rock Springs 4-H Center (required)
  • June 15 Medical Physical Form due
  • July 29-August 6 Backpacking Trip
  • Registration: Please register for the program utilizing the on-line registration process. Go to www.Kansas4-H.org , click on "Register for Events" in upper left cornerhttp://www.kansas4-h.org and follow instructions. You will receive via snail mail additional information, including an invoice and forms which will require parental signatures and must be returned to the State 4-H Office.

    Fee: $500 ($200 deposit due March 1, $300 due May 1). The The 9-day trip fee includes transportation, program fees, campground fees, insurance, 15 meals, shirt, equipment and supplies. Participants will be responsible for their personal clothing/gear and purchasing 7 meals on the road trip. Crew equipment will be provided; participants will be responsible for personal gear (see Gear Info on the Venturer’s website for more details).

    Tentative Schedule:

  • Tuesday, July 29 Depart Kansas, camp at Black Mesa State Park, Oklahoma
  • Wednesday, July 30 Travel to Santa Fe, explore Capulin Volcano National Monument, NM; meet up with Arkansas 4-H’ers and prepare for the trail
  • Thursday, July 31 Travel to Pecos Wilderness Area — hit the trail!
  • Friday, August 1-4 Hike 30-40+ miles, carrying 35-45 lb. backpacks!
  • Monday, August 4 Come off the trail, travel to Amarillo, TX
  • Tuesday, August 5 Explore Palo Duro Canyon & see the Texas Musical Drama!
  • Wednesday, Aug 6 Travel back to Kansas
  • What are the medical requirements?

    Because this is a physically and mentally demanding experience, it is very important that participants be in good physical condition. Specific requirements include:

    • Physical medical examination (due June 15)
    • Tetanus shot or booster (within 5 years)
    • Top physical condition (those who have marked obesity for height and/or are physically inactive will not be accepted)
    • Medical conditions that are aggravated by strenuous activity include asthma, high blood pressure, heart conditions, poorly controlled diabetes.
