Submitted by Pam Van Horn

The annual 4-H Shooting Sports Year-end Report and Renewal Forms and instructions are available on the 4-H web site at http://www.kansas4-h.org/projects/agriculture-and-natural-resources/shooting-sports/index.html.

Each Local Extension Unit that offers 4-H Shooting Sport is required to submit the following reports to the Kansas 4-H State 4-H Office by the Local 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator on or before November 1, 2018.

Information reported is from October 1, 2017 through September 30, 2018. Renewals are $5 per person (no matter if instructor in multiple disciplines).  The following reports are required:

  1. Local Extension Unit Report – a summation of the coordinator(s) and instructor(s) reports.
Forms are due November 1; however, between November 2 until December 1, renewals will double to $10 per person. Finally, the deadline for all forms is December 1 in order to continue with 4-H Shooting Sports for the 2018 – 2019 4-H year.

  2. Instructor & Coordinator Report – use this form for all certified coordinators and instructors that are current volunteers serving as coordinator, discipline instructor, junior apprentices, apprentice and adult helpers (see definitions below).

Shooting Sports Position Definitions

Coordinator
– Responsible under the guidance of the local extension agent for the overall coordination and management of the county/district 4-H Shooting Sports Program; must be 21 years old or older, serve as a registered volunteer and must have completed the Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports certification training.

Instructor – Responsible under the guidance of the local 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator and extension agent for the teaching of knowledge and skills related to a specific discipline to 4-H members ages 8 – 18; must be 21 years old or older and serve as a registered volunteer and must have completed the Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports certification training.

Junior Apprentice - Shall perform all duties of an instructor under the direct supervision of a certified discipline instructor; must be ages 14 -18 by training date, serve as a registered volunteer and completed the Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports certification training. To become a discipline instructor, the junior apprentice will need to complete the instructor discipline training previously attended again when age 21.

Apprentice – Upon becoming age 18, a Junior Apprentice’s title becomes Apprentice. This position shall perform all duties of an instructor under the direct supervision of a certified discipline instructor; must be ages 18 – 20 by training date, (Note: It is unlikely that a 18, 19, or 20 year old would take training during this age range, rather it is recommended that if they were not a Jr. Apprentice they volunteer as an adult helper and wait to take full Instructor Certification training at age 21), and serve as a registered volunteer and or have completed the discipline training as a Junior Apprentice. To become a discipline instructor, the apprentice will need to complete the instructor discipline training previously attended again when age 21.

Helper – An adult volunteer, 18 years of age and older, and not a previous Junior Apprentice, must serve as a registered volunteer that has participated in local 4-H Shooting Sports Trainings given by the local 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator and/or Instructor. Live fire activities must be under the direct supervision of the discipline specific certified instructor (i.e. if the session is a shotgun activity, then a certified shotgun instructor must be present for live fire).
