Academic Year Exchanges for 2018-19

Submitted by Mary Kay Munson

A Geary County 4-H family is completing the application process to host a FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) student for 2018-19.  We are committed to host at least two students in the Academic Year Programs through States’ 4-H International Exchange Programs (States’ 4-H), so we are seeking additional families to host in the next school year.

Students still available for 4-H Academic Year Exchanges are part of Labo and LEX in Japan, Bright Futures Education (BFE) in South Korea, and FLEX.  FLEX is a U.S. government program involving closely-selected students from former Communist countries of Eastern Europe and Asia, who want to be leaders in their home countries. It intends to promote leadership development, civic engagement and volunteerism as well as intercultural exchange.  The FLEX students are screened for good English skills and academic schools.  Home countries for FLEX students still available include:  Armenia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Moldova and Estonia.

This is an opportunity for families to learn about a culture by adding a family member who attends local public schools, participates in local 4-H, and becomes a member of the family.  It is open to all families, whether or not they currently have teens at home.
