YES Students Now Available for AYP Placements in 2019-20
As announced last month, Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) students are available through States’ 4-H International Exchange Programs (States’ 4-H) this coming school year. This is the first time 4-H has hosted this program. The first ten students’ applications arrived in early April with students from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, India, Indonesia, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Turkey included. One SW Kansas family has an application in process. Ten more applications are expected at the time of this writing.
Additional hosts are needed in Kansas for high school students from the YES program, Japan (Labo and LEX) and South Korea’s Better Futures Education (BFE). All students arrive in August and stay with a family while attending a public high school and participating in school and 4-H activities through the school year. They have health insurance and pay for their own school and personal expenses. Families provide three meals a day, lodging and transportation. There are no requirements for host siblings, but 4-H’ers have reported it is so much fun to have a sibling their age they can assist and do things with. Parents experiencing an” empty nest” who want to stay involved in their youth community find hosting an asset.
