Black Walnut
Scientific Name: Juglans nigra
Category: Fruits and Nuts
Description:
Black walnuts are large trees that grow up to 75 feet tall and are native to Kansas. The leaves are alternately arranged and are pinnate, with up to 15 leaflets. The fruits of this tree are initially about the size of a racquet ball and covered in a green husk. Over time, the husk turns black and falls away and reveals a black nut. The nut is covered in ridges and darker in the furrows than in the ridges.
