Fig
Scientific Name: Ficus carica
Category: Fruits and Nuts
Description:
Figs are fruit crops that are native to the Mediterranean Sea area, but some varieties can grow in Kansas. The leaves of figs are alternately arranged and usually have five rounded lobes. The fruit is teardrop shaped and are green or purple, depending on the variety. To grow in Kansas, the plant should be cut back to 2-3 nodes above the base of the plant and mulched heavily to protect it from the cold. When the weather warms up, the mulch should be removed.
