2022 4-H Geology State Field Trip
June 10-12, 2022
Osage Cuestas and Chautauqua Hills
Open to 4-H Geology project members and their families - all participants are asked to register for the event
The headquarters for the 2022 4-H Geology State Field Trip is the Old Iron Club, located at 10393 Jade Road in Fredonia, Kansas. At the Highway 400 “roundabout” east of Fredonia, proceed east on Highway 47 approximately 1/4 mile to Jade Road (first gravel road). Turn south on Jade Road and proceed approximately 3/4 mile to the Old Iron Club. Signs will be posted for check-in and parking.
EXHIBIT BOXES AND T-SHIRTS: Please be aware that the deadline for orders of exhibit boxes and field trip t-shirts is May 20 at midnight and must be purchased separately from general registration. Exhibit boxes are $50 each for Pine and $60 each for Oak, Walnut or Cottonwood. T-shirts are $15 each.
The deadline for field trip registration is May 27 at 12:00 noon. The registration fee is $15 per person for everyone attending the field trip.
The Saturday field trip will be sedimentary rocks and fossils from the Pennsylvanian age. The Sunday field trip will be igneous rocks and minerals from Silver Dome. A variety of workshops and activities are planned for Friday and Saturday evening. Project members are encouraged to participate in judging and quiz bowl. A catered supper will be provided Saturday evening for $8.00 per person and we will have a variety of education publications for sale through the Kansas Geological Survey.
Friday June 10: Registration and judging contest begin at 4:00 PM. You are on your own for supper. The formal meeting will start at 6:30 PM with a general information/orientation session. We will then break out for the workshops including Fossil ID, Rock and Mineral ID, Fluorescent Minerals, Exhibit Box Preparation, Geology 101, and Lapidary / Jewelry Wire Wrap; and geology hands on games and activities for participants.
Saturday June 11: Registration will resume at 7:00 AM. A group meeting will take place at 7:30 AM in the headquarters. We plan to depart at 8:00 AM to begin the field trip. Everyone should bring a picnic lunch and drinks for the day. We will return at 5:30 PM. An evening meal will be available for those who purchase tickets in advance with online trip registration. Saturday evening events will include quiz bowl, judging contest and specimen identification.
Sunday June 12: We will begin cleaning the headquarters facilities at 7:00 AM. There will be a non-denominational worship service at 7:30 AM. A group meeting will take place at 8:00 AM and we will depart at 8:30 AM to begin the field trip. Everyone should bring a picnic lunch and drinks for the day.
