2023 4-H Geology State Field Trip

Open to 4-H Geology project members and their families - all participants are asked to register for the event.

The headquarters for the 2023 4-H Geology State Field Trip is the Riley County High School, located at 12451 Fairview Church Road, in Riley, Kansas, 19 miles northwest of Manhattan, just north of US Highway 24.

The Saturday field trip will be sedimentary rocks and fossils from the Permian age and an igneous kimberlite plug. The Sunday field trip will be igneous and metamorphic rocks and minerals from glacial deposits. A variety of workshops and activities are planned for Friday and Saturday evening. Project members are encouraged to participate in judging and quiz bowl. A catered supper will be provided Saturday evening for $8.00 per person and we will have a variety of education publications for sale through the Kansas Geological Survey.

General Agenda 

Friday June 9: Registration and judging contest begin at 4:00 PM. You are on your own for supper. The formal meeting will start at 6:30 PM with a general information/orientation session. We will then break out for the workshops including Fossil ID, Rock and Mineral ID, Fluorescent Minerals, Exhibit Box Preparation, Geology 101, and Lapidary / Jewelry Wire Wrap; the Kimberlite Plug and geology hands on games and activities for participants.

Saturday June 10: Registration will resume at 7:00 AM. A group meeting will take place at 7:30 AM in the headquarters. We plan to depart at 8:00 AM to begin the field trip. Everyone should bring a picnic lunch and drinks for the day. We will return at 5:30 PM. An evening meal will be available for those who purchase tickets in advance with online trip registration. Saturday evening events will include quiz bowl, judging contest and specimen identification.

Sunday June 11: We will begin cleaning the headquarters facilities at 7:00 AM. There will be a nondenominational worship service at 7:30 AM. A group meeting will take place at 8:00 AM and we will depart at 8:30 AM to begin the field trip. Everyone should bring a picnic lunch and drinks for the day.

4-H Junior Leaders interested in helping with the field trip please contact one of the leaders below. We will have special t-shirts for trip leaders and junior leaders again this year.

Indoor and outdoor camping is available at the Riley County High School.
