4-H FOCUS ON THE FUTURE: BUILDING EFFECTIVE SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES
Over the past few months, the Department of 4-H Youth Development has
focused on the Focus on the Future goal of "building effective systems and structures".You told us that improving the 4-H website should be a top priority and
we are making good progress. We have developed a site map with you in
mind, are reviewing all the pages and learning a new Content Management
System (CMS) that is compatible with the new look and feel of
K-State and KSRE websites. The 4-H Youth Development staff are working on this throughout the summer and we plan to launch the new and improved website this fall.
In addition, revising the 4-H policy document is also a high priority. Thanks to those of you that submitted suggestions and input for consideration related to 4-H policy. A small group of state, area and local unit staff have begun to review the policies and there were a number of staff that agreed to be reviewers. Thank you! We will introduce the revised policy document late fall 2012.
We believe that by paying attention to our systems and structures we will be in a better position to increase our investment and participation in high quality 4-H youth development.
Thanks to each of you for making a commitment to grow 4-H! Stone
KEY INGREDIENTS FOR 4-H PROGRAM SUCCESS
Throughout the summer, we will continue to highlight the eight elements of positive youth development
and how to incorporate them into your on-going 4-H programs.
Element 3: An Inclusive Environment
An
inclusive environment is one that creates a sense of belonging and encourages
and supports its members with positive and specific feedback. Healthy groups
celebrate the success of all members, taking pride in the collective efforts of
all.
An
inclusive or welcoming environment goes a step beyond a safe environment. It is
one where individuals feel included as a part of the group and feel supported
and encouraged. The feeling of belonging to a group is very important to a
young person. One of the most pronounced developmental needs of adolescent
youth is a sense of belonging or fitting
in.
This is often why youth assume certain styles of dress and behave in certain
ways. One of the most pronounced developmental needs of adolescent youth is a
sense of belonging or fitting in. There are some very simple ways to create
belonging from club or group membership cards to club or county t-shirts
(adapted from Ferrari, 2003).
This
Element is present when:
•
Youth members encourage each other
during
fair judging, at sports events, or
through
academic challenges.
•
Members feel they belong to a specific club,
or
group while knowing that they also belong
to
larger state and national organizations
and
efforts.
•
Signs, banners, t-shirts and other
recognitions
identify the youth’s clubs,
organizations,
and symbols.
•
All members feel free to invite friends and
• Welcome
new members to events
throughout
the program year. | Ways
you can support this Element:
•
Use buttons, t-shirts, hats or other symbols
to
signify group membership.
•
Actively seek out others to diversify group
membership.
•
Provide many forms of recognition, not just to those who excel
in competition with other youth.
•
Involve everyone right from the beginning
through
ice-breakers and other get
acquainted
activities.

SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE 2013
4-H is a community of young people across Kansas who are
learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Volunteers are the heartbeat
of the 4-H program serving as mentors, teachers and friends. The National
Salute to Excellence Volunteer Recognition Award recognizes 4-H volunteers who
demonstrate exceptional service to 4-H. The Kansas Association 4-H Volunteers has
adopted the Salute to Excellence award to recognize and promote Kansas 4-H
volunteers who have excelled in their roles locally and continue with selecting
Kansas’ top volunteers for National competition. The Kansas Association of Volunteers believes
establishing the Salute to Excellence Award will provide two options for the
Kansas 4-H Program: 1) recognition of 4-H Volunteers for their outstanding
contributions to 4-H youth and 2) enhances the mission and awareness of the
Kansas Association of 4-H Volunteers.
Each extension unit will
select their representative and submit their nominees electronically to the
Department of 4-H Youth Development by October
15. Those individuals then will have an opportunity to submit application
for the Kansas Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer and Volunteer of the Year.
Kansas honorees then become Kansas’ nominees for the national award. For
specific selection criteria check out Salute to Excellence 2013 Volunteer
Recognition Awards Nomination Form at Kansas 4-H.org under “What’s Hot,” or by visiting http://www.kansas4-h.org/Controls/doc13530.ashx. Van Horn

CHARACTER COUNTS! : WE EXPECT MORE OF ADULTS
Although 11-year-old Mark wasn’t much of an athlete, his dad urged him to play youth baseball. Mark liked to play, but he was hurt by the remarks of teammates and spectators whenever he struck out or dropped a ball. Just before the fourth game of the season, Mark told his dad he didn’t want to go. “I’m no good,” he said, “and everyone knows it.”
His father urged him to stick with it. “Just do your best,” he said. “That’s all anyone can ask. Your best is good enough.”
Mark struck out his first two times at bat, and each time looked over to his father, who struggled to look positive. In his last at-bat, Mark hit the ball solidly, the first time all season. It was a hard grounder to third, and the play at first was close.
When the umpire called Mark out, his father went wild. “Kill the ump!” he yelled. “Are you blind or just stupid? If you can’t do the job, stay off the field!”
On the way home, Mark broke a long silence, “Dad, you said all anyone can ask for is to do his best.” “That’s right, Son,” his father assured him. “You did your best, and I’m proud of you. But that jerk of an umpire robbed you with a bad call.”
“I wasn’t talking about me,” Mark replied, “I was talking about Billy’s dad. He was the umpire. He was doing his best, but you got mad at him.”
His father was taken aback, but he said, “Yeah, but he’s an adult. We should expect more out of adults.” Mark looked his dad in the eye. “That’s what I thought, too. By the way, I was out.”
Despite his father’s good intentions, he didn’t set a good example. We should expect more from adults – more fairness and respect, more sportsmanship and more self-restraint. If your kids play sports, be a model, not a problem.
This is Michael Josephson reminding you that character counts. (May 16, 2012) submitted by Gerhard

4-H NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE DAY
On October 10, 2012, millions of young people across the nation will become scientists for the day during the fifth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD). NYSD is the premier national rallying event for year-round 4-H Science programming, bringing together youth, volunteers and educators from the nation’s 111 land-grant colleges and universities to simultaneously complete the National Science Experiment. http://www.4-h.org/4-h-national-youth-science-day/.
• The Experiment - 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge In this year's experiment, the 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge, youth will enhance their engineering skills by learning to think like a robotics engineer, assembling their own robots, also known as Eco-bots, and control surfaces in order to manage an environmental clean-up. Youth will then test the interaction between the Eco-Bot’s environmental engineering design features and various control surface configurations to determine the most effective environmental clean-up solution for a simulated toxic spill.
Part One: Build Your Bot Youth will assemble their own Eco-Bot, then discover how the robot functions.
Part Two: The Goal is Control Youth will design a set of control surfaces to program the Eco-Bot to perform a simulated environmental clean-up project.
Part Three: Make a Clean Sweep Youth will measure the effectiveness of their control surfaces by recording how much of the spill is “swept up” by the Eco-Bot.
Resources These easy-to-use guides explain the science, technology and math behind 2012 National Science Experiment on engineering robotic solutions. o Youth Guide o Facilitator Guide o Bailey Beach Mat
Why Robotics? From the Roomba© that dances around your kitchen floor, to the sophisticated robotic arms on the International Space Station, robots play a critical role in how we complete tasks. As part of the 2012 National Science Experiment, 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge, youth will assemble their own Eco-Bots and control surfaces in order to manage an environmental clean-up. Research from the Tufts Institute on Positive Youth Development shows that youth who participate in 4-H are more likely to pursue careers in science, engineering, technology or math. Youth who participate in 4-H National Youth Science Day or other complementary programs and curricula show an increased interest in science and engineering through hands-on experiments that model robotics, programming and problem solving. Participants recognize what robots can do, how they are programmed, and the role they serve in solving community issues.
4-H is Leading the Way Today, more than 400,000 4-H youth participate in robotics and engineering programs through 4-H clubs. Our comprehensive robotics curriculum engages youth in grades 4-12 in the discovery of science concepts related to robotics, the engineering design process and exploration of careers in the field. Thanks to ongoing partnerships with leading engineering and technology-based innovators like Lockheed Martin, Toyota, John Deere and FIRST Robotics, 4-H can provide valuable insight into scientific advances of today—engaging 4-H’ers in solving the world’s issues just might mean we find the solutions of tomorrow.
