Kansas 4-H Wheat Variety Plot Winners Announced

Submitted by Kelsey Nordyke

The 2023 Kansas 4-H/FFA Wheat Variety Plot wrapped up with the judging of the Wheat Variety Displays at the 2023 Kansas State Fair Saturday, September 9, 2023. The 4-H/FFA Wheat Variety Plot program is an educational growing experience where members are provided 10 pounds of 5 varieties of wheat supplied by donors. Participants use approved practices in soil preparation, planting, fertilization and harvesting of their wheat plots. Members collect data and make observations of the varieties throughout the growing season and are encouraged to develop a display for their local fair(s) to inform the public about wheat production, wheat quality, varietal differences, yields, mill-bake qualities and marketing. Each local display is then eligible for entry into the 4-H/FFA Wheat Variety Display at the Kansas State Fair.

Ten 4-H members from six different Extension Units across the state enrolled in the program for 2023. Four members entered their displays in the Kansas State Fair. The seed for the Wheat Variety plots is sponsored by Kansas Wheat Alliance, Polansky Seed, WestBred Seed and Oklahoma Genetics, Inc/Oklahoma State University. Signs are provided to 4-H’ers by Kansas Wheat Alliance. The top 5 Wheat Variety Displays at the Kansas State Fair are awarded plaques and cash prizes. This year’s winners are:
