Youth Community Perceptions

Submitted by Jaime Menon

Hello All Agents and Specialists!

This message comes because of a program that KSRE Community Vitality and 4-H have collaborated to create, and now has grown feet faster than we suspected it would!

Brief Intro:

Youth Community Perceptions a program that focuses on youth civic engagement at the local level. Youth Community Perceptions is a community evaluation and assessment program that allows youth to discover the unique assets and strengths of their community as well as the needs, providing them with an opportunity to engage in community conversations and improvement. The program assists youth and communities in:

  • Creating opportunities for youth to have a voice in the community.
  • Involving and familiarizing youth with local government and community processes.
  • Bridging the gap between youth, local government, and the community.

Why the hurry to get you information?

Well, it seems that community service is soon to be a part of graduation requirements in Kansas, many schools are looking for civic engagement curriculum. Oddly enough the Youth Community Perceptions pilot (shout out to our sponsor ESP Alpha Rho for so kindly funding the pilot!) allowed us to refine our materials in a way that meets Kansas Education System Accreditation (KESA) standards. So pretty much, there are materials on our website that teachers can download and utilize at this very moment, and there has been a lot of excitement among schools and Kansas Association for Youth (KAY) Clubs thus far!

Why is this important to know?

Aside from giving you the opportunity to utilize the program and materials if you so choose, there is one important part of the Youth Community Perceptions program that you must know: it was created to “drive attention to Extension”. Applications for the program require the signature of a county or district Extension Agent, and possibly involvement if they wish to refer to you as a neutral party to look over presentation materials (just to make sure things seem tactful. No one wants to see a powerpoint slide of their home with the words “This place looks junky!” superimposed on it).

As noted, this program grew feet so fast that we didn’t have time to get on to 4-H Update to inform you, so we are providing this information in the Tuesday Letter, the 4-H Tip Sheet, on the website, and by webinar.
