As we look into 2020, I wanted to share with you a document that has helped shape my understanding of how rich the learning in 4-H is and can be. Consider it an invitation to a self study and share with me the parts that resonate with you and your 4-H experience.

The 4-H Learning Experience, A Framework for Learning and Teaching in 4-H https://nifa.usda.gov/sites/default/files/resource/4-H-Learning-Experience.pdf  - Located at https://nifa.usda.gov/program/4-h-learning

The gathering of Positive Youth Development Research in this article is a good backdrop to the science behind the 4-H experience and why 4-H has been such a longstanding and effective means of helping youth grow up!

I hope this can be a helpful background primer as we hear from Dr. Mary Arnold about the latest 4-H THRIVE research in Wichita during 4-H Program Rally and as we discuss the Learning Pathways available to 4-H youth through project based learning and related experiences.  As we know more about how youth grow and develop, we will be better able to adapt our practice within Kansas 4-H to best illustrate that science in action!

Page one asserts, "In the center of the 4-H learning experience is the youth learner and the educator, connected by transformative relationships. Together learner and educator actively engage in progressive learning pathways through the learning environment towards learning outcomes."

What does that mean in everyday language?

Simply this,

4-H provides the context for

Youth and caring adults to do and learn together

Pursuing confidence and competence

To benefit themselves and the community.

As I pause to reflect this holiday season, I am so thankful for the thousands of adults who give of their time and energies in Extension 4-H Youth Development Programs in schools and in over 700 out of school 4-H community and project 4-H clubs across Kansas. Learning by doing takes work, and that work is making a difference! Thank you for your service and choosing to OPT IN each and every day for the sake of youth!
