Renaming of Citizenship Mandate to Civic Engagement

Submitted by Deryl E. Waldren

In the fall of 2017, the 4-H Program Leadership Working Group (PLWG) chartered a study group to review the name of the 4-H Citizenship mission area. On February 26, 2018, the PLWG approved three recommendations of the study group:

Recommendation 1: Change the name of the Citizenship mission area to Civic Engagement; Recommendation 2: Within the current citizenship framework, switch the Civic Engagement title box to “Community Engagement”; Recommendation 3: Recommend that the PLWG lead a process to refresh the current framework for this program area.

At this point, the 4-H system will start referring to this mission area as Civic Engagement. In Kansas 4-H during a transition period, we will refer to this as Civic Engagement (citizenship and leadership). In the coming weeks you will find an updated framework on the 4-H NIFA and www.4-H.org websites.
